It was already September, and the night air carried a sharp chill. Yet Isabella pressed her face stubbornly against the car window, staring out as if oblivious to the cold. She didn't move a muscle, careful not to draw Alexander's attention.

The past few days had been overcast, the sky so heavy with clouds that not a single star showed. It mirrored the weight pressing on her chest—confused, suffocating, and inescapable.

She shot a glare out the window, wishing she could jump out, if not for her injured foot.

The two of them sat in the car in silence, neither speaking. She couldn't make sense of what he was thinking. He was getting engaged tomorrow, and yet here he was, locking his ex in the car. Didn't he care that if this got out, his fiancée might get mad?

She drifted into a restless sleep, waking hours later to find that it was already 5:00 am.

She glanced over, and Alexander was still asleep. She reached for the door handle, and to her surprise, it opened with a soft click.
