Isabella felt like Lydia was a godsend. If they hadn't run into each other on the street, she had no idea how she would have managed to keep going with her injuries while searching for Theodore.
The moment Lydia found out Isabella was planning to leave the country, she offered help right away.
Isabella's passport was still at home, and she had to return to get it. Since Emma hadn't noticed she'd slipped out of the hospital, she had to hurry before Emma noticed she was gone.
"Wait here for me. I'll get it. Where's your passport?" Lydia asked.
Isabella replied, "It's in the nightstand drawer, the first one."
Lydia arched an eyebrow in surprise. As she headed upstairs, she teased with a playful laugh, "So I guess you and Theodore really do share a bed, huh? I thought you two weren't actually married!"
Isabella froze, and when Lydia came back downstairs with the passport, she asked, confused, "Why would you think Theodore and I aren't really married?"
Lydia sized her up seriously before answering, "Because you just don't fit the image of a rich man's wife."
Isabella blinked, taken aback.
"I'm not saying you're plain. You're beautiful, pure, charming, the kind of woman anyone would fall for. But honestly, you don't seem like the type who'd be the wife of a wealthy man. At first, I figured you were just some placeholder Theodore picked."
Hearing Lydia say that made Isabella feel a little uncomfortable, but she knew it was probably how most people saw her marriage to Theodore, like his friends or business associates.
Noticing Isabella's silence, Lydia leaned in curiously and asked, "So, how did you and Theodore end up together?"
Isabella lifted her head, trying to push down the sourness in her chest. She forced a smile and said, "What if I told you I offered to support him? Would you believe me?"
Lydia's eyes widened in shock, her head shaking furiously before she nodded vigorously. "I don't believe what others say, but I believe you!"
Isabella was confused. "Why? We've only met twice, after all."
