“Ari has a lover. It could be a boyfriend or a girlfriend. I’m not really sure. But he’s been constantly calling for this fucking Danny every night he sleeps,” I blurted out as I opened Bradley’s door. “He also has Sophie on the side even if he already has mates. Can you believe that? That guy is a total player!”

I sat in front of Bradley’s mahogany table. It was bothering me for days now. I had to let it out. I couldn’t hold it in after seeing Ari with Sophie. I loved women for as long as I can remember. I didn’t discriminate. Betas and omegas were welcome in my bed. But today, for the first time in my life, I had come to hate a woman. I was jealous of a woman.

Because of an alpha.

Was the Moon Goddess playing games with me? How could I sink this low?

And how could Sophie easily make Ari approach her and choose to sit with her over me? He chatted with her and he never usually chatted that long with anyone else. I knew because I’d been watching. Ari was usually wary of others. But he allowed Sophie to get close to him. In fact, his face instantly softened whenever he was talking to her while he either glared at me or casually insulted the hell out of me as if my existence bothered him.

It wasn’t fair. I was his mate and not her.

And then there was this Danny. Just the thought of it pissed me off more.

Bradley’s forehead creased. “And all that matters because?”

He wouldn’t fool me. He was just as affected. His grip around his pen tightened.

For the past years, people wondered how Aidan, Bradley, and I had become friends. All three of us found each other at the borders. When my twin brother died, I volunteered to be sent there. I was close to becoming rabid. Bradley’s dragon fell on the borders while Aidan and I were dealing with the rogues.

We bonded over pain. Over loss. Aidan had lost his mate, Bradley had lost his wife, and I’d lost a family member. There was an instant connection that I couldn’t explain back then. I didn’t know if it was the same for them, but their presence somehow helped clear my mind and gave me purpose. I just knew we were going to be brothers for life.

That wasn’t enough though. We were like a family with a missing member. And that member’s loss felt more important to me the past years. That’s why I was excited about the possibility of having a mate. I thought it would complete me. I thought that my mate would be their sister and she would complete our family.

I never thought that ‘she’ would be a ‘he’ and that he was going to become our mate. I had never heard of anyone having more than one mate. It sounded ridiculous. How could the three of us share one person? And an alpha at that?

Not to mention that Aidan had stated many times that he didn’t like sharing. Then again, Shorty didn’t look like he wanted to be shared. If anything, he looked like he wanted to murder us all.

At that time, when the three of us met each other at the borders, was it the Moon Goddess’ way of preparing us for our mate’s arrival? Did she want us to be close so that when Ari came, we were already connected?

But why did it have to be a guy like Ari with a questionable background? It was like the Goddess was fucking with me. I loved pretty things. Ari was pretty, alright. The prettiest I’d seen so far! But he still had a cock. As tiny as it was, it was still a goddamn cock.

It was the same with Ari. He didn’t look particularly thrilled by us. Shorty glanced at each of us that day at orientation and looked extremely burdened by us.

The audacity.

I leaned on the chair and ran my fingers over my hair. Just like before, I found myself in the middle of having a mental breakdown.

“Take it easy, Sebastian,” Bradley said as he poured a red liquor and handed me a glass. “Aidan gave me a call and said he has found a mage.”

“Really?” Relief surged inside me. “Who? And when is this mage coming?”

“A month from now. You know him. He is Aidan’s best friend, His Imperial Highness Zane Black. We will only have to deal with that brat for a month. After that, we will regain our peace.”

Will we?

I drained my glass and glanced at him, frowning. “I’ve stated my reason. What about you? Why do you dislike Ari so much? Is it just because he got in through improper methods? Aidan and I know you better than that, Bradley. Your hatred about Ari seems to run deep.”

His glass broke as his eyes darkened. “The Grays cannot be trusted, Sebastian. I know Ari’s father. He is a thief.”

I raised a brow. “How did you know him? And what did he steal?”

“My wife.”

Bradley didn’t tell me anything more. He grabbed another bottle of liquor and drowned himself in it. His last two words kept ringing in my ears as I walked back to the dormitory. August cannot beat Bradley in a duel. Even if he had mana, it was simply impossible for him to win from someone whose beast could shapeshift into a dragon.

But Bradley’s ex-wife was a werewolf. Did August cast a spell on her? Was that the reason why he was able to snatch her from him? Because it was hard to imagine a woman leaving Bradley on her own freewill. Over the past years, I’d witnessed countless men and women lose their minds over him. Even female dragons came down many times, hoping to catch a glimpse of the elusive Bradley Laurent.

He had always been calm and guarded. No one had made him lose his temper until Ari. His dragon was not the type to make an appearance unless there was a national crisis. When Bradley trained students, he only ever used his wolf. Yet, during training, we all heard his dragon growl. And we saw his beast flying, chasing the shortest alpha in our generation.

Ari.

The surprises for the day didn’t end there. When I opened the door, I saw Aiçlan sitting on the rug beside Ari’s bed. He was holding Shorty’s hand.

“What the heck?!”

“Hush. You’ll wake him,” he said without glancing my way.

Aidan stared at Ari like he was the reason for his existence.

“You’re being tricked. Ari is a player, Aidan. He’s never going to take the three of us seriously.”

“It’s hard to explain right now, Sev. But Ari is not like that. Besides, who ever said he needs to take ‘us’ seriously? You and Bradley are going to break your bond with him very soon, aren’t you? You said so yourselves. Ari needs people he can trust, people who will take good care of him. And judging by your reactions when you saw him for the first time, you and Bradley won’t be able to do that. That’s why he only needs to take one of us seriously. And that’s me.”

Yes. That was the plan.
