Chapter 33
Chapter 33
(Eli)
Good news: I was still alive. Bad news: my head hurt like a bitch. I could hear voices near me. Everything was blurry when I opened my eyes. It took a while before my vision went back to normal. Despite the throbbing at the back of my head and the relentless pain in my hands, a laugh escaped out of my now dry throat when I realized where I was.
Behind bars.
As if I didn’t suffer enough.
I was lying on a cold floor that looked like it hadn’t been wiped for years. There was only a small window where I could see the sun about to set. That and the flickering lamp was my only source of light.
“She is a witch pretending to be a human! That’s the only valid explanation for the color of her blood, Shanty! She lied to us!”
Lizbeth sounded betrayed. Great. That made two of us.
“You still have the gall to laugh after what you did? What are you planning to do to us? To my brother? Answer me, witch!”
“Damn. You are so stupid, Lizbeth.” I grinned and yet, I felt a hot liquid rolling down my cheeks. They were just sweat, not tears. I wouldn’t cry for this idiot. So, why did the liquid kept leaking from my eyes? “But so am I.”
“I regret being your friend.”
Those five words hurt more than my head. “Really? Thank you.”
“What?” she growled.
“Thank you for reminding me that all relationships are toxic. Even friendship. With this, I no longer have any reason to hesitate to go back to my realm.”
I forced myself to turn around although that took a lot of effort and dumbness on my part. Moving with a head like mine was almost like a suicide. Once I was sure none of the girls could get a glimpse of my face, I let the tears spill as freely and as silently as I could.
What was going to happen to me now?
Can I still go back to my realm?
I felt like I’d been hit by a car. Every part of my body ached so badly that I wanted to scream. I instinctively reached for my bracelet, desperate for even the slightest assurance that everything was going to be okay. My shoulders trembled when I remembered what happened to it.
“Eli…”
That was Shanty.
“Let the traitor be, Shanty. Let’s go.”
I shut my eyes. When I opened them again, the place was now quiet and dark. Too dark. The small light from the lamp was
gone.
“Mom…” I sobbed. “I’m scared. I’m scared again.” When I could no longer stand it, I tried to move. I crawled and crawled through the pain until I finally reached the steel bars. “Let me out please! I can’t breathe!”

Chapter 33
Iclutched my chest. “Black! Where are you?”
Every breath was a struggle.
I tried to keep it together but the fear and excruciating pain from my head were killing me. I remembered tapping the steel bar using the remaining energy I had left before finally giving up the fight.
(Shanty)
“Thank Goddess you came, your highness!”
Lizbeth would think I stabbed her in the back for this. I just could not sit still. Eli was bleeding a lot. The blood may be black, but I could not let her die while our alpha was currently in the human realm for a mission.
That was the reason why I secretly contacted Princess Emmanuelle and asked her to bring Finn, the royal mage. The old man was wearing a simple cloak that hid his identity while the princess was in her usual disguise.
“Let them in,” I told the guards at the detention area before they could ask for a badge.
“But Miss Lizbeth-”
“I have her permission.” I glared at them. “Or are you questioning me?”
“No, Miss Shanty.” They glanced at each other before shaking their heads and acknowledging the people behind me. “Both of you may enter.”
“Goddess!” Emma covered her mouth in shock as we walked upstairs. “Why did you bring Eli to a place like this?”
The detention facility was old and dilapidated. A part of me wanted to believe that Lizbeth brought Eli here because this place was inside our pack territory where everyone was loyal to our alpha. Here, she can still be protected. Here, we can prevent word from spreading. Because if the rumors circulated, others would have hunted Eli. She would have been shot on the spot upon seeing her. No explanation. No investigation. Her black blood was all the evidence they needed. That was how much terror the witches had brought to the shifters.
Even Bridget was kidnapped by a witch when she was only a year old which traumatized my friend and the entire pack. It took a week before Creed tracked their location. We almost lost our little girl who they planned to use as a sacrifice for their demonic ritual.
Lizbeth had all the right to be paranoid after going through something like that. Bridget was skin and bones when she was
found.
However, the words Eli uttered inside her cell haunted me. It affected my friends as well even if they tried to hide it. Carmie and Lizbeth both stiffened. That’s why I did not stop Carmie from leaving to investigate on her own. She brought two of our pack warriors with her.
I sighed. “It was what Lizbeth wanted, your highness. Without our alpha, she has full authority over matters like this.”
“Eli’s too good to be a witch, Shanty. Do you really believe the accusation against her?”
I couldn’t reply. I was torn. Carmie went to Leo’s residence after the latter passed out. We couldn’t get an answer from Candice who was yet to wake up. She was in a clinic and currently being attended by the pack doctor.
When we reached the third floor, I was taken aback when I noticed that the lights were off.
“I’m so sorry, your highness. This place hasn’t been used in a long time,” I quickly explained, embarrassed and worried that Eli had been left in a place this dark for an hour.
Luckily, with a snap of the mage’s hand, the entire floor lit up.

Chapter 33
I was not sure whose woll wailed at the sight that greeted us, whether it was mine or the princess’s. I also did not know who moved first between us. I just knew that both of us moved inredibly fast upon seeing the state Eli was in Emma choked in tears. I couldn’t stop her as she destroyed the door with her bare hands and rushed to get inside. If Eli was a witch, I should separate the two for Emma’s safety but there were traces of blood on the floor.
Eli must have crawled out of fear when the light died. She looked really sick. We were so busy fussing over her that we had forgotten about the mage who came with us. When I turned to look, Finn was on his knees.
“What are you doing?” I asked, more bewildered than ever.
“What have we done?” he responded, his irises turned white, his face was pale as if he had seen a ghost. “Hurry! Ask for mercy! You have laid a finger on someone you should not have. There is a consequence for this!”
“What are you talking about?” Emma and I asked at the same time, our frowns deepening.
Finn seemed to have lost consciousness for a few seconds. When his eyes returned to normal, he ran to Eli and even removed his royal robe to wipe her. He did it gently like he was touching royalty.
“What did you see?” I asked. “Did you find out who she is?”
“Gold. In our records, each ruler in every realm possesses only one aura color: blue. But this girl? It’s gold. I have no idea who or what she is. I only know one thing. She is more than a royalty. And your friend made the mistake of touching her.”
“Of course, Eli’s more than a royalty. She’s a literal angel!” Emma exclaimed.
“She… isn’t a witch?” I inquired.
“Never a witch, Shanty. It looks like Elianna was infected by the dark spell. All witches react violently to mages. She does not. Look closely.” His hand emitted a silver light that passed through Eli’s body and turned to gold. We watched as the black blood we saw had been cleansed and became red. “Mana light does not pass through witches. My mana passed through her, and she even changed its color unconsciously. Send a healer and take her out of here immediately-”
Before Finn could finish speaking, Carmie rushed in, her eyes were round from panic and concern.
“It wasn’t her, Shan! It was Candice who used a witch to interfere with Leo and Silver’s bond! Candice had always been in love with Leo and asked for a witch’s help to have him in exchange for her blood. She used a spell to trap him on her side. That’s why even when he tries to break up with her each time his mate bond with Silver calls out to him, he still returns to Candice in the end. She was able to confess before she died. I recorded it. The healer said that the spell was too dark that her body gave out as soon as the effect on Leo ended. We messed with the wrong person, Shan. What are we going to do now? I heard that Alpha Creed is on his way back to the realm!”
Lizbeth heard it too, she arrived seconds after Carmie did.
Her knees gave out.
She fell onto the floor, wide eyed.
“Eli already has trust issues…” I groaned painfully. “And we just made it worse.”
