Chapter 62

(ER)

‘Elianna.

As soon as Creed excused himself, looking hell-bent on murdering who he said was a trespasser, I heard that voice. It was as if the wind was carrying that sound to me because I couldn’t see mom anywhere no matter where I looked.

“Greetings, your highness. My name is Carlos from the House of Gander. May I have this dance?”

“Your highness, you look like you are in a hurry. May I accompany you?”

“I am Luke from the Bolivar Pack. I heard you have not had a tour around the city yet, your highness. Would you like me and my pack to tour you around?”

That and many more greetings welcomed me from different packs and houses, crowding me in, as I searched for mom, as the wind kept carrying her voice to me, calling me, while the King got swept away by the council’s affairs. Thankfully, they couldn’t get too close.

“Your Highness, princess Emmanuelle is looking for you,” Shanty said as she rushed to me along with Silver and Carmie. The only person missing from the squad was Lizbeth. She was still not allowed to leave her house although I told Creed to lift the ban.

I didn’t think it was fair for her to be stuck in there although I was not ready to see her yet in our home and at this party. Maybe someday.

“She told us to bring you to her,” Carmie added politely. “Please excuse us, my lords.”

To my relief, they brought me to the garden. The hall was starting to become stressful and suffocating with all the men who were looking at me, especially at my throat. I shivered when I caught some of them licking their upper lip while blatantly staring at my throat. Unlike the men in the realm that I was used to, their focus was not on my body but the ugly feeling it brought to me was still the same.

“We apologize, your highness. Princess Emmanuelle is not here. She was the only excuse we could think of to get you away from the guests. Alpha Creed ordered us to take care of you while he and the pack searched around the parameters. I heard there was an intruder. Soon, more guards will be heading our way. The soldiers will be blocking all the entrances and exits,” Silver explained, breaking the silence between us as she gestured to the metal chair where I plopped down.

They came prepared. The table in the garden already had drinks and snacks. The girls smiled upon seeing me confused. “Before Alpha Creed went to hunt, he said that you need to replenish your energy. He told us to get some food for you.” And whose fault was it that I was this hungry now? Their alpha consumed all my energy in the library. I blushed and grabbed the bottled water first and emptied it. When I realized they were still standing, I motioned the chairs around the table.

“Why are you still standing? Sit with me,” I invited.

“Thank you, your highness,” they answered altogether.

I shook my head. “You can still call me Eli. Nothing has to change.”

“But you are a royalty now, your highness.”

“Then I’m ordering you to call me Eli.”

They smiled affectionately. “Thank you, Eli.”

Ishook my head. “Goodness, stop being too formal around me. It doesn’t suit you.” They giggled. “Anyway, have you eaten?” They shook their heads. “Join me. I’m starving.”

I didn’t get to grab a bite while I was with the King because every now and then, guests would come and chat with us Maybe if I hadn’t fallen in love with one of them, I wouldn’t have consented to this party. But I saw it as an opportunity to stay, to belong, to be with Creed without being questioned whether I deserved to be by his side or not.

This was an opportunity not just for me but also for my mother. If she would see that I was safe here, then maybe I could urge her to try and stay with me here where she didn’t have to hide who she was anymore because now that half of my identity had been revealed, it occurred to me that maybe she was hiding from certain people that’s why she dyed her hair, wear ridiculous eyeglasses, and thick scarves that hid her face. There was another side of mom, another side of us, that she didn’t want the world to find out, including me, which was absurd because I needed to know who and what I was to assume my identity.

But now that I was a princess, there was a place where we could stay, where we could be together and live freely. We would be protected here. I just had to make her see that.

After hearing her voice a while ago, I thought we could talk, that maybe she was here, but the voice disappeared.

“Whatever happened to Alpha’s code anyway? Why were those lords making a move on me?” I asked after my second sandwich.

“If you were a human, they would ignore it, they would fight this pull you seem to have for all the single men in this realm, Eli,” Shanty answered after chewing on her pancetta pear and pecan puff. “But you turn out to be a werewolf and there are rumors saying that you are a powerful mage. Words of how you got rid of a witch’s spell on Silver’s mate had spread.”

“It was Leo’s family. They warned people about witches and somehow, your name got dragged down, claiming that if it wasn’t for you, their son would still be spellbound,” Silver admitted guiltily. “I’m sorry. I couldn’t stop their mouths from running.”

“The bottom line is that for everyone who heard it, they see you as powerful and still unmated in their eyes because you are not wearing Alpha Creed’s mark on your throat,” Shanty resumed her explanation.

My brows furrowed. “So, Creed has to mark me to make it official?”

The three of them nodded.

“That’s how it’s done in this realm, Eli. But marking, in the world you came from, is equivalent to marriage. No, scratch that, it’s far greater than marriage.”

I didn’t have time to process it because I heard mom’s voice again. Now I was sure she was around here. I glanced at the girls. “Can you stay here for a while? I’ll make sure to be in a place where you can still see me and watch me from a distance. I just have to do something.”

“But we are ordered to be around you throughout the-”

“Please? My mom is here.”

That ended all their objections. Understanding crossed their eyes.

“We will guard you from here, Eli,” Carmie assured me.

“Thanks.”

I quickly rose from my seat and followed the voice which led me to the dark corner of the garden where I saw a female figure standing. My chest throbbed. I could only see her back, but it was her. I just knew it. Because in the middle of the dark, she shone like she always did. Her blonde hair was shinier than before and was longer too, it now reached her waist. I

could smell her from here.

The smell of comfort. Jasmine and cedar. She was wearing a plain old maroon robe that I had no idea where the heck she got but trust mom to always wear the most outdated style. Did she think we were in the ancient era or something? That robe looked like it existed a lifetime ago. I sobbed. I must have looked batshit crazy tonight. Smiling while bawling. I couldn’t help it. She had always been strange, but she was my mom. My best friend. My first protector. My first teacher.

“Mom… You’re really here.”

She turned to me, sobbing harder. “I promised you I would come, didn’t I?”

I ran to her, but she took a step back after seeing something in me. The betrayal in her eyes hit me like a sucker punch.

“Elianna…” suddenly, she sounded grieving as more tears formed in her eyes. “Wasn’t it enough that you didn’t listen to me? That you let them claim you as one of them? As their princess?” She clutched her chest. “And now, here you are, carrying a werewolf’s child. Sweetheart, how many times are you going to break my heart?”
