Chapter 83

“You are a princess now, the wealthiest woman in this realm. You can buy everything you want, eat to your heart’s content. With your influence, no one is going to judge you or belittle you now,” I told the woman staring back at me in the mirror. “You live in a castle and soon, you will have a crown up your pretty head. You literally have everything. So, why the hell do you feel so empty?”
My mom told me that it was just the pregnancy hormones, that it was normal to feel up and then down again the next moment. But for the past six weeks, the only time I felt ‘up’ was when I woke up in a foreign place and found her running to me in the hallway. I didn’t know where it was because I fainted on the way out, but like this realm, I remembered the place was filled with beautiful creatures, including the man I saw who frowned at me during the few seconds our gazes crossed before we passed by each other.
After that, there was this immense relief in my chest at the thought that I was no longer a Richards, not a Dawson too. Elianna Rosewood Beckett. That was my name now. My mom finally told me my father’s name, that he was another supernatural being who passed away, and how she couldn’t reveal about him to me before because she was being hunted. That’s why she had to change her identity.
During her run, she met Frederick Dawson, a rich human, who promised her the sun and moon crap and offered her protection. Bullshit. The old man couldn’t even protect himself. He swore he would become her savior and ended up becoming her tormentor. Mom didn’t tell me how she was abused, saying I shouldn’t have to hear the rest of the details. Maybe it was for the best. I didn’t want to end up a murderer, not when I was about to be a mother in a few months’ time.
Although my uncles, the dragon king and the dragon lord, must have taken care of Frederick. I heard he was missing while Easton was in prison who I heard stole from people to feed his gambling addiction. Luckily, he got caught.
He was Frederick’s son with another woman and I hated the fact that I only found out recently. And to think I gave up my savings to save Easton’s ass before. Frederick got one of his staff pregnant. She dumped the baby at his doorstep before leaving for another country. Despite the betrayal, mom loved him like her own. But clearly, it wasn’t reciprocated with the way Easton had completely forgotten about her when she was in a coma.
They were miles away from us now. We should be having the time of our lives. Yet, here I was.
Sometimes, when I saw dragons flying, when I looked around the castle on this island where no humans could reach, I wondered if I was inside a dream. It was like falling asleep with Richards still on my side, telling me to behave in front of the cameras at the gala, and then waking up in some sort of a fantasy land.
But considering that I was no longer surprised or amazed by everything must mean that they were telling the truth. I knew about all this before the accident that took some of my memories away. Mom said we were ambushed by some rebels and that had been taken care of. Now, all I had to do was live in peace on this island. We would be protected as long as we were here.
The woman in the mirror began shedding tears. Her shoulders shook.
If this was normal, then why was I constantly down? I didn’t feel peaceful at all. Pregnancy was supposed to be a roller coaster ride where I experienced the ups and downs. But so far, since waking up, I’d only been down.
I quickly wiped my tears away when I heard a knock in my room
“Come in.”
When I saw Uncle Jack who refused to be called ‘His Excellency, I wanted to smile. Like mom said, she and I were finally home. I did feel like I belonged in this place. But for some reason, it still didn’t feel right with me.
There was a female servant behind Uncle Jack who pushed the trolley full of food that would certainly smell amazing for me
in another time.
Chapter 83
“What’s with all the food? We just had snacks an hour ago, I told him, trying to sound cheerful.
“We did, but you only ate two burgers,” Uncle Anson, suddenly appearing behind his brother. “We were worried.”
“You make it sound like I’m a glutton or something.”
“Well, you could usually finish four or five of them no matter what you feel,” Uncle Jack answered, grinning. They were people I’d normally be afraid of because of how giant they were, but they were too good-looking to be feared.
The books stated that Uncle Jack was one of the most ruthless dragons to ever rule their realm, but in front of me and mom, he was just a caring brother and a goofy uncle who had already completed the nursery with his gifts.
“I’m guessing you were tired of the snacks our chefs were preparing. I brought a variety of food from different realms that might suit your palate. The beverages are from the mages, the snacks are from your favorite shop in the human realm, and the sweets are from the werewolves.”
Werewolves.
Uncle Jack briefly mentioned them when I asked about the other realms. It was like the subject was banned in this place. Mom despised them. They told me to be wary about them, that apart from Hugo, the former dragon king, the werewolves were the second major reason why she was hunted for a long time, why she had to jump from one realm to another.
The dragons could end her abusers at once. All she had to do was give them names or show them sketches of their faces. The problem was she could not recognize them. She didn’t get to see their faces. And we all witnessed how much it frustrated her.
Mom had been staying in her room more often these days, saying that she was slowly using her tamer powers. My uncles believed it was because of the amount of powers mom had exhausted upon reviving me which made me very guilty for still feeling like this even if this was my dream. To see her awake and be with her.
Yet, here I was again. Curious about her enemies, even sketching them.
Uncle Anson glanced at the scattered doodles in my room. The crease in his forehead deepened upon picking up one of the papers on the carpet.
“Two werewolves? Black and gray?”
I shrugged. “I kept seeing the black one in my dreams.”
“And the gray one?”
“He’s different. My imagination must be playing a trick on me. Because most times, I feel like I could see him staring at me outside my window. But when I blink, he’d disappear. Just last night, he got very close. He was in this very room, beside my bed. And he touched me. The scariest part was that I couldn’t do anything about it.”
Thinking about it made me shiver. During my dreams, the black and red fur wolf didn’t frighten me at all unlike the gray one who made my skin crawl. When his hand grazed my cheek, I wanted to puke.
To my surprise, both of my uncles’ dragons growled.
“If you saw him plenty of times, then it was not an imagination,” Uncle Anson answered, his expression hardened, “It was real. This island has been invaded.”
