Chapter 327

Pip POV

It was hard talking about how I ended up with Dan, but Dan was my life, my love, he kept me sane when everything around me was falling apart, gave me reasons to get up each day, and made me smile and laugh. I can’t imagine my life without him.

The X–ray people were gentle; many of us usually show no empathy for what you are going through. They can’t feel the pain you are going through; they want the best position for a clear

picture. But this man was gentle and did his best not to cause too much pain.

I was wheeled back to a waiting Skunk and no doubt waiting for more on Dan and my life.

“Where was I?” I asked when I was back in bed.

“Just been raped.” Skunk spat out. Did he think I was dirty now? That’s what Richard said: “No man

would want me now.”

“A few months later, I found out I was pregnant. Wrench was my rock; she has been there every step of the way. I didn’t want to tell Richard; he would have cared anyway. But I was due any day when I saw him in a café with his now–fiancée. He saw me and smirked. He didn’t try to approach me, and I hoped having a steady girl would mean he would leave me alone, but he showed up at the hospital the day before I was discharged. He looked at Dan, at me, and left. He didn’t demand anything. Again, I hoped that was it. But he started to show up when he was drunk, accusing me of making his life harder. He was often fighting with his girlfriend. I moved to the bungalow, hoping the move would keep me safe. It took a year, but he found me; he was no longer with his woman, and he blamed my bastaard kid and me for it. When he needed an alibi, he showed up, demanded I say I was with him, and leave.

It didn’t happen often, and the police never came knocking. You saw today how things go; he didn’t expect me to have support because, in the past, I hadn’t brought the club or my sister into it. They never knew, but I was on the phone with my sister when he came knocking on the door. I didn’t hang up, and my sister heard it all. The rest, you know.” I sighed. This was the most I had talked about this to anyone. I don’t understand why I felt comfortable telling Skunk. Maybe it was because of Dan’s influence, as he had shown he trusted Skunk and wanted to be with him. Skunk was the first man he had willingly gone to without my encouragement. I still can’t believe I found Dan on Skunk’s lap, eating, sharing. That was a special moment. One, that I won’t be forgetting anytime soon.

The doctor returned, giving me a break to talk about something that still hurts me deeply inside, to

talk about.

“You have nothing broken, and your left hip is slightly dislocated; we can push it back, and give you

some meds for pain and swelling. Your neck is bruised and still swelling, which might make your speech difficult when the swelling peaks. The reports will be forwarded to the arresting officer. Any questions?” I shook my head no.

“Good, the nurse will bring you the prescriptions.” The doctor hesitated, for a moment, as if she wanted to say more, but shook her head and left. I lay watching Skunk, he had hold of my hand, running circles over the back of it. He hadn’t asked any more questions, just watching me watching him. I didn’t know what I felt right now, I was full of mixed feelings. Each time I had thought something positive would happen in my life, Richard found a way to ruin it.

“Is Richard on Dan’s birth certificate?” That was not a question I had expected to hear from Skunk.

Of all the things he could have asked, that wasn’t one of them.

“No, I left it blank.” I didn’t want Richard to have anything to do with Dan. When he’s old enough, he

can ask, but I won’t be offering much until he is a teenager or older.

“Then I want to pose a suggestion for you to think about.”

I nodded for him to continue.
