Chapter 329
Pip POV
I felt useless; both my hips were hurting. The left is the worst when I walk, compared to the right, most likely because of the slight dislocation. Dan had been with Skunk all afternoon, and Skunk was still smiling and chatting with Dan. It was good to see how happy Dan was around Skunk, the only other man he had allowed to have Dan on his lap, was Jip. Wrench had babysat often enough for him to be used to being around Jip. We reached the back door, and Skunk opened it and stepped aside for me to enter before following me in. Dan had already chosen a place to sit and was watching us as we entered.
“I will get us some plates and go sit with Dan.” Skunk headed to the food table, returned with two
huge plates, placed one in front of me, picked Dan up, sat him on his lap, then cut up the food.
Dan had a fork of his own and was selecting food, popping some into Skunk’s mouth, then his own. I think Skunk got two mouthfuls to Dan’s one. When Skunk didn’t open his mouth quickly enough, Dan would say “AHHHHH.” I couldn’t stop giggling when that happened. It was so adorable, and poor Skunk had to accept the mouthful before he had a chance to swallow the last one.
The table soon filled, and the surrounding chatter was normal and good, with no sign of
aggression or stress.
This was the best meal, watching my son interact. It was like they had always been like that. I pushed my plate away, having eaten enough. Skunk pulled it to him and started cutting the food. Dan, having finished the other plate, started the feeding process all over again. It was worth not finishing my plate to watch these two.
Their feeding had entertained the whole table.
After dinner, we went into the games room. It was one they built for children, and a separate one for the adults; it was Fixer’s idea that the children should have a play area of their own. The older children had video games, and other stimuli, such as dolls for young girls, and trucks, cars and other toys for the little ones. Dan would be like a moth to a flame, darting forward to grab all the bikes he could find. My boy was bike possessed. I know what he will be driving when he gets his license, or should that be riding? Yeah, riding, I can see him getting both licenses, but the bike would be his preferred mode of transport.
I sat and watched, rubbing my left hip absentmindedly.
“Do you need more pain meds?” Skunk asked when he left Dan to play and sat down next to me.
“Yes, I think I need more.” Skunk pulled the bottle out of his jacket, handed it to me, then reached over and picked up a bottle of water he had put there earlier, unscrewed the lid, and handed it to
Chapter 329
An hour later, Dan came back to us, rubbing his eyes. My man was ready for bed.
“Time for bed, Champ?” Skunk asked as Dan climbed onto his lap. My boy no longer sought out my lap, and I was unsure how I felt about that. I miss his cuddles, and it’s only been two days, including yesterday’s celebration. If I accept Skunk’s offer, I will have to share my son, something I hadn’t thought about until now.
“Bed,” Dan agreed, snuggling in.
“Pip, ready for bed, or do you want to stay here for longer?” Skunk asked as he stood up, ready to
take Dan to his bed.
“I am ready to lie down again.”
Skunk didn’t lead us to the stairs, but back out the door, and towards his carriage.
“What, our rooms upstairs?” I argued, trying to get Skunk to change directions.
“Does that mean you have decided my offer is a no?” he asked, looking at me, hurt.
“What? No? I haven’t made that decision yet.”
“Then my room is where you and Dan stay until you deny me the pleasure of having you as my wife, or Dan as my son.” He turned and continued up the path to his carriage. By the time we reached it, Dan was asleep. Skunk lowered him to bed and tucked him in, turning to me.
“Do you want one of my shirts to sleep in?” I guess I will need to bring some of my things here while I make up my mind.
“I suppose.”
“There’s a bag at the foot of the bed. I had Wrench pack some things for you and Dan. I told her you would be staying with me, so I can look after Dan until you are well enough to take over.” Skunk pointed to the bag, and I moved a little too quickly. Unzipped it and sighed.
Guess I don’t need to pack a few things.
Are they conspiring against me?
