“You don’t have to do this, you know that right?” I sighed, exasperated, as Maddox carried me to his parked car.
“You’re not strong enough to be moving around,” he replied. His arm gripped my waist firmly.
I shook my head. “Even if I’m not, which I am, we were offered a wheelchair before we left the ward. And you/refused.”)
“Well, I want to carry you,” he said casually.
I stared at him as we got into the car. He was still holding me.
“Can you put me down please?” I asked. I felt a bit overwhelmed. His perfume was invading my nostrils
He obliged quietly, still carrying that guilty expression on his face. I still didn’t know why he was carrying that look.
I’m alright. Despite the deeply traumatizing experience that occurred, I am actually okay.
I’m fine, I think.
Or at least now I am. I’ve gotten to the point of acceptance. Most times when crazy things happen to or around me, I spiral a bit. Then calm down. It’s the easiest way for me to calm down my nervous system.
It’s crazy, but it’s effective.
I’ll need to cry, let it all out. Then I’ll be fine. I’ve gotten to that point now. I’ve made peace with it. I will definitely die someday. Today wasn’t that day, at least. I’m quite grateful.
Maddox discharged Leo before we left. He’s to resume officially in a couple of days, I won’t be stepping out, so I won’t really be needing any security.
We pulled over in the driveway of his penthouse.
“I thought we were going to the condo?” I asked, surprised.
“You need to rest,” he said as we alighted. “This is the only way I’ll be sure that you will. I’ll have to monitor you.”
I walked behind him as he directed me to a room.
“This will be yours for the meantime,” he said, stepping out of the doorway for me to enter.
I stared at the room silently.
“Is it not to your liking?” he asked, looking a bit uncomfortable.
“No, it’s great,” I said quickly. “I’m just surprised it isn’t black, that’s all.”
He chuckled slightly. “The interior designer and I had a silly bet. If he designed the house to my taste and I actually love it, he’ll get to design any room of my choosing. So I sacrificed this room.”
I stared at the gray-colored walls with little moon scribbles. The bed frame was ash, and the beddings were gray also. It was really cutesy, the opposite of his house aesthetic.
“I love it. It’s really pretty,” I said, stepping into the room.
“I’m not even surprised.” he replied, leaning on the door frame and handing me a bag. “It has everything you need in it. I’ll be in my room if you need anything.”

Chapter 71
“Okay,” I replied as he walked away.
I took a deep breath as he left and locked the door.
I sat on the bed and grabbed my phone. I dialed Natalie immediately.
“Nia!” she shouted as she picked up the call. “I was worried sick. How are you doing?”
“I’m a lot better now,” I answered truthfully. “It all still feels like a dream.”
“Which is perfectly normal,” she replied. “It’s not every day you get drowned.”
I exhaled deeply.
“Where are you?” she asked.
“I’m at Maddox’s place,” I answered.
“Nia, really?” she asked.

“Yes,” I replied. “The place is swarming with paps. I don’t want to be caught by them in this situation. They make things a lo more unbearable than they already are.”
“That’s true,” she replied. “Take care of yourself, okay?”
“I definitely will. Thank you.” I bade her goodbye and ended the call.
I texted the rest of my friends-Beck, Samantha, Brittany, Edna, and Mr. Hale’s assistant. I needed to reassure them that I was okay.
I took off my clothes and hopped into the shower. I let the hot water run from my hair to my feet. I was feeling really
exhausted.
It’s crazy to think that I now have a personal security guard. And he’s to follow me everywhere? That’s crazy indeed.
I didn’t like the idea, but I’ll admit that it’s necessary.
I’m surprised by how quickly the news travelled. That’s insane. It’s almost like bad news gains more traction than good ones.
I got dressed in the lime-green cashmere pajamas Maddox packed for me. I can definitely wear this out as a cute loungewear set. Who wears cashmere to sleep?
I took the stairs down to see Maddox on his laptop, seated on the couch.
“You’re not asleep?” I asked.
“I have work to do,” he said simply. “I can’t sleep until it’s done. You?”
“You work?” I asked, shocked.
“Why are you sounding surprised?” he asked, not taking his eyes off the laptop.
“Because I am,” I shrugged and took a seat.
“You think I only play hockey for work?” he raised an eyebrow. “I do a lot of other things, Nia.”
“That’s cool.” I replied absentmindedly.
“Hungry?” he asked.

“Not yet,” I said. “I’ll eat later.”
I placed my phone on the coffee table and laid down on the couch.
“What’s going to happen to Bella?” I asked. We haven’t had this conversation yet.
He balled his hand into a fist. “I’ll handle it. Don’t worry.”
“How??” I asked, unsure.
“Don’t worry about it,” he said simply.
“It’s not your fault, you know.”
His head snapped to mine immediately.
“I wasn’t there when you needed help,” he said. “She wouldn’t have pushed you in if not for me.”
“She pushed me on her own volition,” I said, shaking my head.
“It still doesn’t change the point,” he said simply. “My world was rocked when your hair stylist and makeup artist reached our to my team. My team delivered the news to me. I rushed to you seated on the floor, soaked and covered in flash bulbs. My heart sank.”
My phone pinged on the table, catching both our attention.
I frowned and reached for it.
Unknown Number.
A cold knot formed in my stomach.
“No matter where you go, I’ll always find you because you belong to me.”
My blood turned to ice.
For a second, I couldn’t breathe.
Maddox noticed my expression immediately. “Nia?”
I didn’t answer. I simply handed him the phone. The moment he read the message, every trace of color drained from his face.
The room went silent.
“Who is it?” I whispered.
