i froze as I saw the text message. My heart beat out of my chest wildly. It was Trey. I knew for a fact that he was the one.
There’s no one else who can send that except him. I turned to stare at Maddox, who was clenching his jaw so hard I was scared for his teeth.
“That’s Trey, right?” he asked as my head snapped toward him.
How did he know Trey?
“This isn’t about how I got to know about him, Nia,” he replied, closing his laptop. “I need more answers, and you’re going to give them to me.”
“Did I say that out loud?” I asked.
“No.” he answered. “But your face gave it away.”
He stood up and paced around a bit before turning to me.
“Treyson Jeremiah Tylo, born 19th June 1997. Sociology major but dropped out in his third year with a CGPA of 4.85 because he went to rehab. Suffers from severe depression and bipolar disorder. He’s also a drug addict.”
I stared at the wooden floor pattern, unable to meet his face. I don’t think I’ve felt shame like this in my life. I have horrible taste in men, I’m aware of that, but I don’t want to be reminded of that by Maddox of all people.
He took the seat next to me. “Nia.”
“I’m not telling you this to make you feel bad. That’s not my intention. I had my PI look into him because he was seen haying a heated conversation with you before Bella pushed you into the pool. I just want to understand what’s going on. It’ll be a lot easier if you help me. Bella has been MIA since the incident, but I have people looking for her already. Trey is the only lead we have, and we’re not even aware of his whereabouts.”
“You have to help me help you, Nia.”
“I was feeling overstimulated at the brunch, so I decided to take a walk. I walked toward the pool and ran into Trey. He told me he just got out of rehab and has been searching for me everywhere. I told him I wanted nothing to do with him, and he got upset before Leo intervened and took him out. As he was escorted out, he thanked Bella.”
I paused to take a deep breath.
“I went to confront Bella. Apparently, she’s friends with Trey. Childhood friends, I believe. She gave up all the information she had about me, including my phone number. Her plan is to use him to get me out of the way so you both can be together. The conversation got pretty heated and…”
I trailed off as Maddox took a seat next to me.
“She pushed you into the pool.”
“Yeah,” I said dryly.
“I’m sorry,” he said, grabbing both my hands.
“It’s alright,” I replied.
“Would you mind telling me what Trey was like?” he asked.
“Um. I do…”

“You don’t have to, of course, if you’re comfortable with it,” he interrupted me before walking to the fridge to grab us some snacks.
“Only if you tell me about Bella?” I asked, smiling a bit.
“You’ve got yourself a deal then,” he said, scooping ice creams into a bowl. “Vanilla or strawberry?”
“Vanilla,” I replied. “Vanilla is the goat.”
“I agree,” he walked up to me and handed me a bowl of vanilla ice cream with gummy bears, sprinkles, and waffles, alongside a huge bag of Doritos. The original salted ones. “You prefer this, right? This is the only one I’ve ever seen you eating.”
“It’s my favourite,” I said, munching on it. “Yours?”
“I don’t really eat Doritos, but if I do, it’ll be the flaming hot ones,” he replied.
“Fair enough then,” I replied.
“What got you into Jeremiah then?” he said, smiling.
I burst out laughing. “Jeremiah is crazy. He didn’t even like to be called Treyson.”
“What’s your middle name?” he asked.
“Never.” I replied, laughing. “Unless you say yours first.”
“Theodore,” he said, looking away.
“Theodore? It’s so cute,” I said, smiling. “Theodore.”
He turned to face me. His eyes were surprisingly warm. There was an almost vulnerable look to it.
“I haven’t heard that name since my mom left. My father never called me that name. He hated it so much. I don’t even know why.”
I took notice of the way he said “my Mom” and then “my Father.” It shows very clearly the kind of relationship he has with both of them. He obviously cares for one more than the other.
I can’t even begin to imagine what it’ll be like growing up with Victor Kane as a father figure. It would have been very hectic. It’s no wonder Maddox turned out the way he did.
“What’s yours, Nia?” he said, smiling.
I smiled mischievously. “Hmmm, let me think.”
“C’mon, don’t be like that, Nia,” he replied.
“I don’t know, Theodore,” I said, laughing. “Do you mind if I call you that?”
“I won’t if you tell me yours,” he said, taking a spoonful of his ice cream.
“It’s Emily,” I replied.
He tested it on his tongue. “Emily.”
“It’s very Disney princess coded. It’s very suiting. Emily.”
There’s something about the way my name rolled off his tongue. I’ve never really been a fan of the name for no particular
