Chapter 73
Maddox
“You haven’t told me about how you met Jeremiah,” I said, smiling. “Sorry that I keep bringing it up. I’m just curious.
Her smile wavered. I almost felt guilty for asking.
“It’s okay if you don’t want to talk about it.”
“It’s alright,” she replied, taking a spoonful of her ice cream. “We met in my second year of college at a fray house party. We kind of hit it off very well that night. We talked for a couple of weeks before we started dating. We dated for 6 months before we broke up.”
“He became obsessive, calling almost every two hours to know my whereabouts and then showing up randomly. It was so bad I couldn’t even talk to guys anymore. He would get so mad. Even go as far as threatening them to stay away from me I told him that we needed to break up. I couldn’t cope anymore. Even after the break up, the harassment didn’t stop. I fileda restraining order, but he didn’t stop spawning randomly. I kept reporting until I got tired. Before he finally went to rehab, remember feeling so happy that he was finally going away, and now he’s back.”
“You still have a copy of that restraining order, right?” I asked.
“Yeah, I do,” she replied.
“Okay, good.” I replied, grabbing my phone to send a text to my PI. To let him know about the restraining order.
“Your turn,” she smirked. “How did you meet Miss Laurent?”
I laughed as she pronounced her last name with a mock French accent.
“I’ve always known Bella. We met when we were kids at a birthday party. Heck, I can’t even remember the kid who was even celebrating his birthday. She’s the only one I really cared about enough to notice.”
I sighed deeply.
“We dated for about four years before I found out she was cheating.”
“Sorry about that,” she said softly. “How did you find out?”
“I walked in on them, in her house. I travelled and came back two days earlier than I expected. I decided to stop at her place to pay her a visit, then I walked in on them. It rocked my world.”
“That’s the reason I can never be comfortable with male and female besties. He was just a friend. She never failed to remind me of that. Until I found him balls deep in someone I called my woman. I almost dropped to my knees. She broke my heart in the most gruesome way.”
“I’m so sorry,” she replied, shaking her head.
“It’s alright. There’s no need to apologise. I’m over it now,” I replied.
I turned to face her. She looked a little lost in thought.
“What is it?”
“What’s what?” she asked.
I took the last spoonful of my ice cream. “You look like you want to say something.”

“Nothing really,” she paused to shove the last pieces of chips in her face. “It’s just that I’m now beginning to see why you don’t like my friendship with Beck and Liam.”
“It’s not that I don’t like it,” I turned to face her.
Wait, why don’t I like their relationship? I’m not supposed to have a problem with it as she’s not my girl, right?
I stared at her, unable to formulate the right set of words to say.
“I’m feeling very tired. I need to take a nap,” she said, stifling a yawn and saving me.
“Go to bed, Nia. You need all the rest you can get,” I answered.
“Okay. Good night, Maddox.” I watched as she walked upstairs to her room.
I felt a bit giddy as she left. We’ve been having more and more civil conversations lately. It’s great, actually. The constant disagreements are becoming very tiring.
I opened my laptop, got a bit of work done, and headed to bed. I knew for a fact that I would sleep well tonight.
A call woke me up early the next morning. It was my PI.
“Mr. Kane,” he said, skipping the pleasantries. “We’ve found the location of Miss Laurent.”
“That’s great,” I said. “Where is she?”
“She’s in Paris now,” he replied.
“Paris?” I felt irritation course through my veins. “She pushed Nia into the pool to drown, and then she went on vacation?”
“Should we apprehend her?” he asked, and I paused to think. “It might pose a bit of a challenge, but we can use Interpol.”
“Not yet. Observe her movement for a while,” I said. “I don’t want this escalating more than it should. You have the CCTV footage, right?”
“Yes, sir,” he replied.
“I’ll have my attorney prepare a lawsuit to send to Bella’s team today. If she tries to make any funny movements after receiving the lawsuit, then you’ll apprehend her,” I said finally after giving it much thought.
I texted the details to my attorney immediately. There was no time to let things dwindle.
“Okay, sir,” he said, ending the call.
My phone rang again before I could even set it down. It was a conference call from my father, Beck, and his attorney.
“Maddox,” Father said as soon as I answered. “You better not be thinking of filing a lawsuit against Bella.”
“What?” I said, shocked. “She tried to kill Nia. She drowned in that pool.”
“But she didn’t,” he said sharply. “You’re jeopardizing the relationship I’ve invested so much in building over the years.”
“To Nia’s detriment?” I asked, aghast.

“Who is Nia?” he barked angrily. “She is nothing but an arrangement, a convenient one. You cannot place her over Bella. She is a key factor in your image.”
