Contracted To The Beast novel Chapter 74

Chapter 74

Chapter 74

I woke up the next morning feeling a lot better than I did when I went to sleep. I took a very deep stretch before heading to the bathroom to wash my face and brush my teeth.

“Good morning.” Maddox greeted me as I came down the stairs. He was wearing gym shorts and running shoes.

His back was turned to me as he faced the cooker.

“Good morning,” I replied, taking a seat. “Are you making pancakes?”

“You loved my pancakes, huh?” he chuckled without turning around.

“Yes. I did. They were okay.” I replied.

“Nah. They were a sensation,” he placed a steaming cup of chamomile tea in front of me. “Best pancakes you’ve ever had.

can bet.”

He was right. Absolutely right.

They were indeed the best pancakes I’ve ever had if I’m to be very honest. But he’ll never get me to admit it, not to his face at least.

“You’re not going to say anything?” he laughed.

I rolled my eyes as he placed a plate of omelettes and toasts in front of me.

“Thank you,” I said before taking a piece of eggs into my mouth. “Mmm.”

“It tastes good, right?” he said, taking the seat in front of me.

“Yeah, it does. I should hire you to be my private chef,” I said, laughing.

“It depends on what you’re offering,” he replied sassily.

“Is my unrequited and undying love not good enough as a payment?” he burst out laughing immediately.

“Nia, please,” he said, getting up with an empty plate.

“Did you inhale your food?” I asked, shocked.

“No, I ate it at a normal speed,” he said, walking to the kitchen. “I have a meeting this morning and practice later

“Oh, okay,” I replied, still munching. “I want to go home today. I need to see Mom and my baby”

He turned to face me. “Yeah, you do. She’s been worried sick. You have the rest of the week off and maybe next week too.”

“I don’t think I’ll be needing next week,” I said to him.

“It’s too early to make a decision, Nia. Rest first, then conclude later.” He grabbed our plates and loaded the dishwasher “Im going to get ready.”

I moved to the couch and took a seat, watching his retreating figure. His back is very broad, I noted absentmindedly. He probably got it from years and years of hockey practice.

I pulled my knee to my chest. I really didn’t know how to face Mom. She sounded really sad on the phone. I wonder what the conversation she had with Maddox was like. He hasn’t brought it up since.

Chapter 74

Mom really isn’t a fan of Maddox, and rightfully so, I might add. He hasn’t been the best person. But lately…

I’ll say he has been tolerable lately. We’re not best friends or anything, but at least we have gotten to the point of having civil conversations at least.

Am I warming up to him? I think that’s too far a stretch, but we’re cool now to an extent.

I wonder how long I can keep Zara a secret from him. I really don’t know. How will he react when he finds out? Will he be mad? Will he distance himself from her? Will he want her?

There’s no way he will deny her, that’s for sure. She’s his splitting image. Unless he says she is Beck’s, which isn’t even realistic at all.

What if he wants her? And takes her away from me? I can’t let that happen. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to recover from it.

No, I know I won’t.

Maddox descended the stairs dressed in a navy blue suit with matching pants and white dress shirt, carrying his hockey duffel bag.

“Leo is on his way here,” he said as he walked to where I was sitting. “I just sent the passcodes to you.”

“Your passcodes?” I asked, shocked.

“Yeah, the penthouse access,” he said casually. “You need to lock the doors as you leave and open anytime you want to come back.”

“Um, okay.” I said, surprised.

Does he give people his home access this casually? I highly doubt that. What if I was a thief? I’ll make fortunes from selling off his properties.

“Hope you’re not getting any funny ideas, Nia?” he asked, staring at me quizzically.

“No.” I said with a reassuring smile.

“I don’t know if that smile increased my anxiety or puts me at ease?” he said, shaking his head.

“It’s safe with me, I promise,” I said, laughing.

“Okay then,” he turned to leave. “Have a nice day and cooperate with Leo, please. He is already outside.”

“I’ll try my best.” He gave me a final warning look before he stepped out.

“Tell him to come in,” I called out to him as he left. I don’t even know if he heard.

I sighed and went upstairs to take a shower. I didn’t want to keep Leo waiting for so long.

I changed into a pair of jeans and an oversized graphic tee. I paired my outfit with sandals. I was headed home anyway, so there wasn’t any need for me to dress so seriously.

I grabbed the duffel bag and my purse and headed out.

“Good morning, ma’am.” Leo greeted me as I got outside and helped me with my bags.

“Sorry for keeping you waiting.” I said, feeling a bit guilty.

“You don’t have to apologise, ma’am.” he said, placing the bag in the trunk of the Escalade.
