Right after I returned from the dungeon and the throne room, I didn’t even clean up. I headed to the bedroom, gathered Cassian’s clothes that still had his scent, strong and warm, and made a nest in the center of the bed. I locked the door behind me, turned the lights off, and blocked the orange evening light.
My head was full of thoughts, about Cassian, about my future, and about the whispers I had just heard. I couldn’t believe it was the Moon Goddess, but who else could it be?
I didn’t know.
“Shift, Rye!” I commanded, letting her take over. She snapped, our body snapped, and slowly she moved on top of the bed.
She curled into a ball, snuggling with the clothes. The scent of Cassian, our mate, felt like a warm cuddle. Tears streamed down, soaking her silver fur. Her nose kept sniffing the scent as if it might disappear at any time.
I could feel her heartache echoing mine. We were lost. Maybe we hadn’t experienced the pain of losing our mate entirely. But the thought that our mate wasn’t around us, that he was nowhere to be found and we had no idea whether he was dead or alive, was worse than anything.
And to escape that inexplicable pain, all we could do was push our exhausted body into the bits of his scent.
And I had no idea how long or how many days we were lying in the bed, in the piles of clothes that she had made into a cave for herself.
There were a few knocks on the door at first. Soon there were none. Maybe Draken and Lorenzo told them not to disturb
But I couldn’t care about anything. As if my soul wanted to sleep forever, wishing to wake up and find Cassian around, cuffing his sleeves, knotting his tie, or just there, lying next to me
But it never came.
By day five or six, Lorenzo finally decided to walk in.
I wasn’t sleeping when he entered. Just curling in the warm cave
“Sorry for disturbing you right now. But… the pack needs you. All the people are waiting for your appearance as the new leader!”
I looked up, letting Rye push herself into one of Cassian’s T-shirts. Once I shifted, I might not have my clothes on.
“You declared that I am the leader?” I asked, shifting, grabbing the blanket to cover myself properly. “Without my input on it?” I didn’t sound rude, just surprised.
He politely looked away, walking toward the couch by the floor-to-ceiling window. “Yes, the elders did,” he quietly responded.
“We needed to do it urgently and knew that you would be fine. Also, we have already handled lots of official stuff, including making a new seal for you to use.”
“What? Why?” I asked, my throat dry. “I can use Cassian’s seal just fine.”
“It’s alright. As the Luna Queen, you should have had a seal yourself to handle the internal affairs from the beginning. Since you need to handle both, I thought it would be best to have your own seal.”

Although he was saying it so casually, having an official seal meant I was accepted as a Luna by law. I had my own power to make decisions on behalf of the King. My fingers tightened slightly over the blanket. Power felt heavier than I expected.
“It’s a huge decision,” I murmured, mostly to myself. It was a huge deal, and I didn’t have time to process it.
“Everyone has agreed to this. Also, they are willing to give it a try. His Majesty spoke about you highly when the news of you being a contractual Luna spread across the region. They trust you. Your Highness.”
I blinked, letting the words sink in. Trust? Me? After everything I had gone through, could I really be worthy of that? A small warmth spread in my chest, unexpected but welcome.
As I took a deep breath, he moved to the next discussion. “The official statement of strengthening the border force and military enforcement has been published officially on the inter-regional websites to make sure nobody takes any steps to start a war!” He informed me, handing me the tablet.
I held the tablet and read the email twice before handing it over The email was clear and final. Anyone with a brain wouldn’t dare to cross the line we had drawn. I exhaled slowly. At least one thing was clear in this messy world.
“Thank you. Well done, Beta Lorenzo!” I smiled a bit, although it didn’t reach my eyes.
He nodded politely. “We have sent an official statement against the Northern Region for war crimes and the abuse of rogues indiscriminately. We will take proper measures for their mischievousness and for hurting the leaders of the pack.”
“Good. Make sure they know we aren’t letting them go.”
“Alright. But, Your Highness, the news of His Majesty being heavily injured will be proven false if Tyran has his body!” He looked concerned.
I shook my head slightly. “I don’t think he would have his body. If he has it, he can’t publicly admit it. It might backfire. He won’t risk it.”
Lorenzo stayed quiet for a second before nodding. “You are right. If he admits that he killed His Majesty, our allies will attack them.”
“I know. Anyway, send three shadow guards to inspect the area. I think we might find a clue there. I don’t think His Majesty would have given up that fast,” I said, recalling the moment when he kept protecting me from the fire. If I wasn’t weak, he would have –
“I will definitely send them. And…” He scrolled down his tablet and looked at me. “I have asked the royal psychiatrist to meet you tomorrow. I hope you will have a talk with him.”
My eyes narrowed. “Why?”
“Well, since we might have hope of finding His Majesty, you should take care of your mental health. If we find him now, he won’t be in a good position to lead the region. So we expect you as our new Alpha and the Luna Queen, to be in your best mental health.”
I closed my eyes for a brief moment and rubbed my temples. Best mental health? Was he serious? I am barely holding myself together here.
“I am fine!” I muttered, sitting on the edge of the bed. Cassian’s stuff was everywhere, and it made me feel at home.
“I know. But it’s better to have someone who can understand your emotions right now.”
Judging by his tone, it felt like he would keep pushing me until agreed. “I will think about it.”
He nodded. “Anyway, I will send Sierra to help and…!” He rubbed the back of his neck and looked guilty.
I raised my brow, unable to understand his sudden shift. “Is there anything more?” I asked quietly.

But to my absolute surprise, he bowed, resting his head on the left side of his chest. “Please accept my sincere apologies. The way I have been blind and behaved around you is nothing short of shameful, and I am ashamed.”
My eyes widened. “What are you doing, Beta Lorenzo?”
“Despite His Majesty’s feelings for you, I continuously tried to sabotage your relationship with him, just to make sure he didn’t get fooled by you. I misjudged your personality and character constantly.”
“Lorenzo?” I whispered, too stunned to say anything. I didn’t remember him doing anything bad to me. I knew that he was cold and didn’t accept me, but I didn’t actually mind since it was a purely business situation between me and Cassian only.
“I regret treating you badly and keeping you hurt. And…”
“It’s enough!” I said, my voice sharp.
He flinched and looked at me with terror in his eyes. He looked genuinely guilty.
“Are you regretting now?” I asked coldly, folding my arms.
He nodded immediately, his face heating up with shame and guilt. “Yes, Your Highness!”
“Then it’s alright,” I said, letting out a sharp yawn. “So lighten up and stay by my side until we find His Majesty, Beta Lorenzo. Will you help me until then?”
His eyes widened. His lips quivered. He might not have expected me to forgive him immediately. But I could understand that. He was a Beta of the Southern Region, the second strongest influence after the King, yet he lowered his head, accepted his wrongdoing, and apologized.
People with that status barely acknowledged the pain they caused in another person’s life. So it wasn’t just shocking; it was eye-opening. Not every high-status person was arrogant.
“I will definitely be there for you until you need me, Your Highness. I swore my loyalty to His Majesty and to his cherished people. I will always be available to help.”
He straightened himself and smiled. “I will ask the chef to prepare your supper soon. You must be hungry.”
I touched my belly, and that was when I noticed it. My stomach Had been rumbling. Heat crawled up my neck to my cheeks. “Yes. Thank you.”
As he walked out, one thing I had realized:
Even in the quiet of this room, I felt the pull to leave, to seek him, to make sure he was truly safe. I didn’t want to give up or think that he was gone.
“I will find you, Cassian. Because I want you to say you love me properly!”
