I held Cassian’s phone and stood right at the spot from where my picture had been taken. Since he was more than six feet five, the angle looked a bit different. But it was the same place where he had stood and taken my picture.

And to take it, he had needed to zoom, to adjust the light and… to make sure the smile on my face was perfectly reflected there.

Standing there, I couldn’t help but wonder how much effort he had given just to take this picture. While I was wondering how I was falling in love with him, he was painting me on the canvas of his heart. When I was wondering how he couldn’t even care about me, he was zooming in, trying to capture my smile.

And the irony was that… this was the first time someone had ever taken my picture this way.

Alex hated it whenever I tried to take selfies. He never said outright that I didn’t look beautiful on camera. He simply avoided taking one.

“So, when people truly fall in love with someone, they don’t actually care about how you look. They don’t notice your flaws. Even if they do, they love them. They find them worthy of love.”

Now I knew why he would always kiss my curves whenever we were together. Now I knew why he held my waist as if I were weightless when people would laugh at me.

He loved the part of me first that people hated.

He didn’t love me because I was his mate. He didn’t love me just because we were compatible in bed. He didn’t only love my soul.

He loved everything about me.

My weight.

My curves.

My ugly face.

And my heart.

I should have understood him more.

I should have seen him the way he saw me.

I wish I could tell him how much I love him. Even once.

“Your Highness.” Sean’s voice came from behind, making me snap out of my thoughts. He walked toward me with two cups

of coffee.

“I didn’t think His Majesty would find this place,” he said quietly, as if hesitating whether he should mention Cassian or not. “This is my secret place.”

He glanced at the small cave behind me. “I usually use this cave to stargaze and camp. Just my things.” He held out the cup for me.

“That’s why I couldn’t recognize where he was standing. It was taken on my birthday,” I muttered, staring at the picture. I couldn’t believe that I looked good in this picture.

“I see,” he said softly. “He might have come here when I asked you to get some flowers.”

I nodded. Cassian was incredibly fast. His movements couldn’t be tracked even if someone tried.

“By the way, Sean…” I squinted to look at him properly since the sunlight was too bright. “There is a scent I’ve been trying to find. I can’t name it. It’s floral, and His Majesty’s scent has a trace of it.”

“A floral trace?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Yes. Just a tiny bit. You can’t even notice it usually.”

He nodded with a thoughtful hum. “You’re his mate. It’s natural you can separate it. I might have something that helps. My master… he collects rare flowers. I kept some of them.”

“Master?” I asked, taking the cup from him.

“He lives deep in the mountains,” Sean said. “He searches for different kinds of flowers, including wild ones. I can show you my collection from him.”

“I would be grateful,” I said with a small smile.

“Follow me, please.”

I took a glance at the farmhouse where Sierra was waiting. I asked her to stay inside while I searched for the place. I hoped she wouldn’t go crazy if she didn’t see me here.

I followed him as he walked past the house toward the greenhouse. At first I thought he would take me there, but to my surprise, he walked past it as well and headed straight into the woods.

“Where are we going?” I asked quietly.

“Just come with me.”

I was skeptical. After all, trusting Keane once had taught me not to follow someone blindly. But I couldn’t stop myself either. I needed to understand this scent and the connection between my visions and it

My heartbeat quickened with every step on the dry leaves. Sean didn’t say anything, only walked deeper into the woods. The woodcutters sounds, the trees moving with the wind, and the distant howling felt like they were drawing something closer to my heart.

Just as I became more alert, I noticed a small house between the trees. Small, wooden, and looked old. Because of the lack of direct sunlight, the woods had turned slightly black. Moss covered the front door thickly.

“We’re here,” he said. “Please be careful. Some dangerous herbs need to grow in darkness.”

When he warned me, I finally noticed them. The house was small, but surrounding it were hundreds of medicinal plants and herbs.

“Wow. Is this your place?” I asked, scanning the surroundings.

“Yes. My lake house. There’s a small lake behind it. Some poisonous aquatic plants and herbs grow there.”

“I’m surprised,” I said, the cup still warm in my hand. “You really have everything, don’t you?”

“I’m a farmer, Your Highness,” he replied with a soft chuckle. “I need everything related to farming.” He unlocked the door and held it for me. “Please, come inside.”

I followed him in. The room was dark. But the moment I stepped inside, a wave of countless floral scents hit my nostrils. Herbs I used to collect from the woods before my marriage – all of them were there.

Sean turned on the lights, and I stopped in my tracks. I froze, my eyes widening. The scene before me made my heart skip.

“There are around eight hundred jars of dried flowers,” he said. “You can check them.”

“That’s a lot. But-”

I walked past them. I didn’t have time for them. My sense of smell had improved with the awakening of my power. I didn’t need to open them. Just walking past them was enough.

“What are you doing?” he asked curiously, folding his arms.

“Wait a minute,” I said, raising my hand.

A’musky, lethargic, strong scent brushed my senses. Too close to Cassian’s. But Cassian’s scent had its own uniqueness, like every other person’s. But this scent…

Just as disappointment crossed my face, Sean opened the backdoor, revealing the lake behind him.

“Did you find what scent you’re searching for?”

“No, I just―”

My words died in my mouth when a powerful wave slammed into my face. That was when my heart skipped a beat.

“This scent-!” I whispered. “This… this is the one I am searching for!” I ran toward the backdoor. “It’s coming from this lake!”

“From this lake?” he asked, his eyes narrowing.

The closer I got, the stronger it became, as if I were walking through its ocean. And when I stood there, staring at the blue water filled with strange plants and a single flower blooming, I knew it was them. water

“They are Black Waterlilies,” Sean said quietly. “Rare. Very poisonous. You shouldn’t stand this close.”

I stared at the flower. It looked like the same Waterlilies, but their petals were sleek, absorbing light, blacker than darkness itself.

“I need one,” I said, my voice sharp.

“You can’t,” he warned. “Even Black Moonflowers are nothing compared to them.”

“I need one. Please…” I begged. “I need to understand-”

I couldn’t speak. My legs felt like lead, my arms heavy and useless. My vision blurred, the edges of the lake twisting and tilting as if the world itself were dissolving.

It didn’t feel like a vision.

It felt like sinking into sleep after a day I had already lived a thousand times over, exhausted beyond measure.

“Your Highness!”

Sean’s hand shot toward my wrist. I reached for him, but my fingers closed on nothing but air.

And in the next second… he was gone.

My chest tightened. My heart hammered. My entire body trembled as if it had forgotten how to move.
