“Please!” I whispered the same words again and again, my voice breaking, because I didn’t know how to make him believe me, how to make him understand that I wouldn’t abandon him, that I would be the family he never had. My throat burned with every breath I took, my lips trembling as the plea slipped out once more.
“Excessive fire triggered his defense, causing him to lose his mind and wreak havoc-!”
“Enough!” I snarled, my voice sharp, cracking with fury. My nails dug into my palm. “You have the audacity to stand there in front of us and preach everything as if you are the victim here?”
Carl’s expression shifted instantly. His eyes widened, his shoulders stiffening as if he had been struck. He was taken aback by my words. “N-No. I am here to-!”
“Shut up. Get out. Maybe because of you, he is on guard. Get out of here!” My chest heaved, every word tasting bitter on my tongue.
“I’m here to help and make up for everything I have—!”
“Leave!”
He pursed his lips, swallowing hard, his jaw tightening as his gaze flickered toward Cassian. Cassian stood quiet as I held his back, his warmth seeping through my palms, grounding me. The steady heat of his body made my eyes sting, tears threatening to spill, but I restrained myself from showing my vulnerability. I couldn’t afford to break now.
“It’s better for you two to leave now. Don’t worry. As she promised, you will have your own way to escape.” Draken said, his voice dripping coldness.
Estelle and Carl both walked out of the basement, their footsteps echoing faintly as they went upstairs. The sound of the door closing felt heavy, final.
I stayed there, quietly hugging the man who couldn’t recognize me. My arms wrapped around him as if I could shield him from the world. At least he was here, in my arms, alive, breathing, and reacting to my whispers, subtly, faintly, but there.
“It’s cruel, isn’t it?” Draken whispered, his voice low, careful. “Using a child, bullying it for its existence… Some parents are cruel, aren’t they?”
I didn’t reply. I couldn’t. Rage churned in my chest, thick and suffocating. Disappointment weighed on my shoulders, and heartbreak pulsed dully with every beat of my heart.
“But how do we make him come to his senses? He has quieted down, hasn’t he?” Draken took a cautious step closer, his movements slow, but-
“GRRRR!” Cassian roared suddenly, the sound ripping through the air. Draken stumbled back, losing his balance and falling onto his butt.
“Don’t get closer!” I said quickly, tightening my hold on Cassian. My arms trembled, but I didn’t let go. “He

will be fine.”
:
He nodded, realizing that Cassian would be dangerous for him to approach.
“Aren’t you hungry? Maybe I can buy something for you.”
“It’s fine, Draken.”
“Are you sure? What if he attacks you? He looks calm, but still in-!”

“Please!” I said, my voice rising despite myself, raw and desperate. “Let me be with him for a few minutes. I will be upstairs soon.”
Draken’s face softened into a defeated look. He nodded quietly and headed out, leaving us alone once more.
I took a deep breath, my lungs aching as the air filled them. My mind was a mess, thoughts crashing into each other. I couldn’t stop thinking about everything that had just happened. The Milestones were good to me. They gave me freedom, love, and everything when I was a child. After marrying Alex, they shifted their attention to him a little, but they were still good to me.
So going through that kind of hell when he was just a kid terrified me. The thought alone made my stomach twist painfully.
“Cassian.” I rubbed his back slowly, deliberately, spreading my scent all over him, hoping it would reach something buried deep inside. “Remember me,” I murmured. “Remember your mate.”
“I am here. I love you so much. Nobody can hurt you anymore. I am your family. I will always be your family.”
He growled, but this time it was quiet, controlled, weak, vibrating softly against my chest. A shaky chuckle escaped me as my hand reached his shoulder. His claws were bleeding, the metallic scent faint but sharp. I slowly trailed my fingers over his shoulders, feeling the tension beneath his skin.
He tried to snarl, lips pulling back slightly, but I didn’t flinch. My heart pounded, yet my feet remained rooted. I would rather be wounded badly than leave him alone. He had almost given up on his life for me. It was my turn to protect him.
“Let me check, okay?” I said softly, carefully holding his wrist, my fingers brushing his rough skin.
“Grrr!!!” A deep sound rumbled from his chest, sending a chill down my spine, but I didn’t move. My breath came shallow, controlled.
“It’s alright. I am here. Let me check.” I smiled gently, meeting those red, empty eyes that barely focused. “They’re bleeding. It must be hurting a lot.” I pressed my lips to the back of his claw, the taste of iron faint against my mouth. “Maybe I can help.”
As I gently stroked his hand, I noticed his breathing growing heavier, uneven. His chest rose and fell faster. He leaned closer, too close to my head, his shadow enveloping me. Then he snitted my hair slowly, deeply, I closed my eyes as his cheek brushed mine, sending a shiver through my body.
“What are you doing?” I asked softly, a breathless chuckle escaping me.

But my breath hitched when his tongue ran over my cheek, warm and unexpected.
“Cass-!”

He buried his face into my neck, sniffing, inhaling deeply, searching, trying to find something familiar. His breath was hot against my skin, making my pulse race.
I didn’t stop him. Maybe my scent could make him feel better. I let go of his claw and wrapped my arms around his neck, hugging him tightly. His chest kept making that low, dangerous sound that could freeze anyone to death, yet I found it calming. An assurance. Maybe it was dangerous. Maybe he could bite my until I died.
But I held him tighter as he sniffed. “Cassian… it tickles,” I whispered, my heart beating wildly.
neck
His body tensed as my fingers curled into his fur. My breath grew faster as I stood there, feeling his warmth, his scent, heavy and lethargic, filling the room.
Both of our breaths started growing heavier, mingling in the air. The chain clunked as he moved closer. This time, he was the one who closed the distance. He pulled me into his arms, his bloodied claws sliding under my dress, stealing my breath away. My body reacted before my mind could catch up, knees weakening slightly.
I didn’t know how long we stayed like that, lost in the moment. Something shifted quietly, subtly. I didn’t notice it until I snapped out of the daze.
“Mine,” he whispered against my throat, his voice rough, possessive. “Mine.”
My eyes widened when I saw him shifting back, still dazed, still blank, but there. Truly there.
“Yes… yours,” I cupped his face with trembling hands, tears streaming freely down my cheeks. “Always. Yours.”
I smashed my lips against his. “Always yours.”
He growled under his breath and lifted me effortlessly. His hand reached my marking spot, brushing it again and again until my body felt weak, surrendering to the sensation.
“Mark me,” I whispered, my voice shaking. “Make me forever yours. Please.”
He looked at me intently, observing, his gaze burning, “Mine.”
I nodded, breathless. “Always.”
