Chloe knew Spotty wouldn’t leave unless she and Noah were safe.

So, she picked up Noah and stepped into the spiritual space.

By now, Sophie was trembling, looking at the Rat King with terror and revulsion.

The Rat King shifted into his human form and picked her up in his arms.

Sophie had always been terrified of rats, and just hearing that she’d have to give birth to them made her face turn deathly ›ale as she let out a terrified scream.

Chloe brought Noah into the spiritual space to heal him. The time meter overhead, which had taken ages to build up, tarted spinning wildly, so fast it was visible to the naked eye.

Chloe shot him a fierce glare and smacked him on the forehead. “What are you talking about? If you wanna die, do it yourself! I finally got a second shot at life. No way I’m dying now.”

She pulled a raft out of the spiritual space, laid Noah on it, and slowly started pulling it along.

The place reeked of blood from the fight, and they needed to get out of there fast.

Noah lay weakly on the raft, stowed his communicator, and watched the little one, Chloe, putting all her strength into dragging him. A faint smile played on his lips.

She really is something else,‘ Noah thought.

Nighttime was when mutant beasts went wild, but thankfully, Chloe still had plenty of the spray she got earlier.

She picked it up and sprayed herself, then all around Noah.

“What’s that?” Noah asked, his curiosity piqued.

“It’s an odor–masking spray. It hides our scent. Unless our luck is really bad and a mutant beast happens to bump into us, they won’t be able to sniff us out,” Chloe explained.

As soon as she finished speaking, Chloe forced a bitter smile, looking utterly miserable.

“Welp, guess we really are cursed,” she muttered.

A python was watching them with predatory intent.

“Host, this python is Level 6, mid–stage, 26 feet long. Just one drop of its venom could kill a cow,” the system warned.

Hearing the system’s description, Chloe swallowed hard.

‘Seriously? The universe just wants me dead, huh?‘ Chloe thought, feeling totally doomed.

The python coiled its tail, flicked its tongue, and got ready to strike.

A bolt of lightning tore through the sky, splitting the python open right at its weak spot. It was instantly killed.

Chloe was totally dumbfounded.

She looked at Noah, who was resting with his eyes closed, then back at the python, split open at its seven–inch mark.

“Was that you?” Chloe asked.

“Yeah, Noah replied, cool as ever.

Chloe gripped the end of the raft and slammed it down on the ground, clearly pissed.

“So you’re all better now? You totally tricked me!” she snapped at Noah.

Noah let out a quiet sigh from the raft.

“Come on, I’m just hurt, not disabled, and my powers are still intact. I can still zap things with lightning.” Noah said, sounding a bit sheepish.

Chloe let out an awkward chuckle, trying to be polite.

“Uh, you must be hungry, right? Here, have a flatbread,” she said, trying to change the subject.

Noah took the flatbread and took a small bite. His eyes instantly lit up.

“Let’s make a deal,” Noah said.

“What is it?” Chloe asked.

“Heard the rye bread from Blaze Haven can bring a powered human’s abilities back,” Noah said, lowering his voice.

“And?” Chloe replied, not looking impressed.

“I’ll pay double the usual price for your rye bread. However much you’ve got, I want it all,” Noah said.

You could hear someone gulping loud and clear.

In her mind, she could almost see a pile of cores waving her over, calling her name.

“Deal!” Chloe said, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

They ate some rye bread and drank water, feeling their strength slowly return.

Suddenly, a patch of white light appeared not far away. A column of brightness seemed to rise straight up from underground, lighting up the whole area.

Chloe heard the system’s voice, practically buzzing with excitement.

“Host, hurry up! The mutant energy source just showed up!” the system yelled.

“Mutant energy source?” Chloe repeated, totally stunned.

“Yeah, it has the same aura as the one under the Botanic Gardens, but it’s much richer and covers a far larger area. It’s spread across the entire island,” the system explained.

“Quick, get it into the spiritual space! Once you have it, it’ll be like having a spiritual vein, and you won’t ever have to grind for cores again,” the system urged.

After a moment, it added, “With this spiritual vein, the spiritual space can keep absorbing energy endlessly and upgrade in no time.”

“Host, hurry up and collect it!” the system pressed.

Chloe checked the time, and it was just past midnight.

Another day had passed, and the spiritual space now gave her two hours a day inside. She could enter again now.

She glanced over at Noah, looking a bit unsure.

But then, Noah slowly got to his feet.

“Thanks for the cores. I really owe you. There’s no way I could ever repay you, Noah said sincerely

“Well, guess the only way to pay her back is to offer yourself up,” a teasing voice rang out from behind.

He arrived with a squad of over a hundred people. “Noah, I was wondering why you dropped off the map after landing on the island. Turns out you were busy trying to win a girl over.”

Chloe didn’t bother sticking around but just spun around and made to leave.

“Hey, Chloe, where do you think you’re going?” Hector called out, teasing.

Chloe kept walking without looking back, but Noah reached out and grabbed her hand.

Noah gave her a helpless look. “It’s dangerous up ahead. At least absorb some cores and get yourself back to peak strength, okay?”

Chloe figured he was right, so she plopped down on the spot, pulled out a basketball–sized core from her spiritual space, and started drawing in its energy.

This was the core from a mutant zombie tiger. It was loaded with power and easy to absorb.

Hector’s eyes nearly popped out. “Chloe, you’re seriously a legend! You actually took down a Level 6, late–stage mutant zombie tiger?”

He said it just loud enough for the crew in the back to catch it.

When the powered humans heard how insanely strong Chloe was, with a spiritual space, healing abilities, and off–the–charts combat power, they were completely blown away.

The powered humans were instantly impressed.

After a short rest, Chloe slowly opened her eyes. Noah had been waiting patiently for her.

Seeing her back at full strength, Noah grinned.

‘Come on, I’ll help you secure the mutant energy source,” Noah said.

Chloe stopped in her tracks, looking at Noah in disbelief. “Wait… you’re actually gonna help me grab it?”

She glanced over her shoulder at the powered humans trailing behind.

Everyone here is chasing their own chance at the mutant energy source. They’re not likely to just let me walk away with it, Chloe thought.
