The sunlight slipped through the blinds, casting a warm glow on my office desk. I was nose-deep in a project report when I noticed Lily and the girls acting fidgety. They kept huddling up, whispering among themselves, and throwing me worried, indignant looks.

Finally, Lily couldn’t contain herself. She sauntered over with her phone, shoving the screen in my face. There was that awful article.

I scanned it in a flash. The words were venomous, spinning a web of lies about my so-called “love affairs” that never happened. It painted me as a conniving gold-digger since college. And the comments below? They were a cesspool of racial slurs and baseless speculations about my half-breed background.

A tightness seized my chest, but more than that, I felt a sense of utter absurdity and a cold, simmering

anger.

“Natalie, this is pure crap!” Lily fumed, her face turning as red as a tomato. “We’ve reached out to some media contacts to set the record straight, but this guy’s from Maritime City TV. He’s got a massive fan base, and the news is spreading like wildfire!”

I set the phone down, took a deep breath, and pushed the discomfort aside. This kind of smear campaign was on my radar when I decided to take on Landon and Aaliyah. I just didn’t expect it to hit me so soon

and so hard.

I said, giving Lily’s hand a reassuring pat, “Chill out. The truth will always shine through. Get in touch with Moon-Shadowed Pack’s legal team. And give the publicity head at Maritime City TV a ring.”

My voice was steady. Losing my cool wouldn’t fix anything; a well-aimed counterattack would.

The call connected in no time. I laid out the situation clearly, stressing how the article was trashing my reputation and that of Moon-Shadowed Pack’s projects. The guy on the other end was all politeness, but I could detect a hint of jitters. Moon-Shadowed Pack carried some serious clout in Maritime City.

“Sort this out ASAP. Take down the false stuff and clean up the mess. My lawyer will handle the legal side. Thanks,” I said and hung up.

“Any idea who’s behind this, Natalie?” Lily asked, her eyes wide with curiosity.

“Some reporter named Norman Reeves. I think he was a classmate from college,” I said, trying to dig up memories of him. The image was hazy; I barely remembered him, let alone any “romance” as the article claimed. Someone was definitely pulling his strings.

“Natalie, you can’t just let them get away with this!” Lily exclaimed, her fists balled.

“Don’t worry. They’ll pay,” I replied, my voice icy. I didn’t forgive and forget easily when it came to my

enemies.

“Wonder if Mr. Sanchez has seen this.” Lily suddenly fretted. “What if he buys into these lies…”

At the mention of his name, my heart skipped a beat. Would he stumble upon the news? Would he believe this nonsense? We’d only known each other a short while, and he knew next to nothing about my past.

But right away, a gut feeling told me that he wouldn’t fall for it.

No explanation, just a gut-deep certainty. Leonardo had a knack for seeing through the BS. He might be aloof, but he wasn’t a fool, and he wouldn’t be swayed by gossip.

Still, out of respect, I figured I should give Leonardo a heads-up. I grabbed my phone and dialed his number.

It went straight to voicemail. He was probably swamped.

Just as I put the phone down, there was a knock on the door. Before I could say a word, Samuel burst in, looking dapper in his snazzy navy-striped suit, leaning casually against the doorframe.
