A simple celebration unfurled in a cozy, heart-warming ambiance. I carefully set the candles on the cake, each one symbolizing his years, and ignited them with my own hands. The shadows of the dancing flames danced across his sharp profile.
“Leonardo, before you blow out those candles, close your eyes and make a wish to the Moon Goddess,” I murmured as I saw him reaching for the cake knife.
He gave me a quick look, then complied without a murmur, shutting his eyes. His long lashes fluttered down, casting a delicate shadow under his eyes. A few seconds later, his eyes popped open. “All set,” he said.
Bending forward, he let out a long breath, snuffing out every candle. A wisp of fragrant, sweet-smelling smoke curled up. Only then did I start dishing out the cake to everyone. Since I knew Leonardo wasn’t into sugary stuff, I skipped offering him a slice.
After serving his grandparents, Leonardo grabbed a huge piece for himself. Under my surprised stare, he dug in, eating with an elegant yet determined air until every crumb was gone.
“Tastes amazing,” he said, putting down his fork and locking eyes with me, his gaze steady and earnest.
It was just an average-tasting cake, but as I watched the contented smiles on his and his grandparents’ faces, it seemed like the sweetest thing on earth.
Fiona and Roger were like little kids, gobbling up a good amount of the cake.
Once we’d finished the cake, Miranda’s video call came through. She chatted with us animatedly, congratulated us on our bonding, and then patched us through to Leonardo’s dad, Ryan Sanchez.
On the screen, Ryan had a face that resembled Leonardo’s, but his features were softer, lacking that sharp, intense edge. His hair was neatly slicked back, and he sported a pair of glasses, looking every bit the serious and refined gentleman. When he talked to me, his tone was okay, but there was hardly a smile on his face, and Ryan exuded an air of aloofness typical of someone in a position of power. He didn’t say much and wasn’t exactly responsive.
Leonardo seemed like he didn’t want me talking to Ryan much. He quickly took the phone and moved to
the side.
I noticed that Ryan wasn’t as amiable with Leonardo. As soon as the pack business came up, his face turned stone-cold, and his tone got harsh. Leonardo shot me a look, telling me to hold on, then headed upstairs to the study with the phone in hand.
Fiona said, patting my hand gently and sighing, “Don’t let it bother you. Their relationship has always been rocky. They hardly ever have a heart-to-heart. Every time they talk, it’s either about work or a lecture.” There was a tinge of sadness and pity in her eyes. “Leonardo… he’s had a rough go of it.”
I got it. Leonardo had stepped away so I wouldn’t see the icy relationship between him and his father and the scolding he might get.

“It’s all good. Work is work,” I replied softly, my eyes following his disappearing figure up the stairs, filled with concern.
I hung out with Fiona in the living room, mostly listening to her gush about the upcoming wedding details. After a while, Fiona walked me to the master bedroom they’d prepared for us.
The estate had a dedicated bedroom wing. Fiona had picked a quiet, south-facing part for us, with a private staircase that led down to a small sitting room and a breakfast nook, offering, the utmost privacy.
As I stepped into the bedroom, a wave of cozy warmth embraced me. The champagne-hued silk bedding, with its cool and plush texture, invited a touch. Beneath my feet, the brand-new shaggy carpet was a cloud-like haven. A crystal lamp on the nightstand cast a soft, golden glow, setting a tranquil and relaxing mood.
