Ayla wasn’t naive enough to bring it up herself her goal was to play the role of Draven’s girlfriend.

For now, just making it seem convincing was enough.

After dinner, Draven held her hand again. The warmth of his palm slowly seeped into hers.

Ayla liked holding hands. It reminded her of the rare tender moments she once had with Troy-memories that had been tainted, but still when she held someone’s hand now, flashes of the past would sometimes surface.

But now she knew clearly-this was Draven’s warmth.

The heat in his hand reminded her she wasn’t alone.

Kayla’s curiosity had been just to meet her. They hadn’t talked much, perhaps intentionally, to avoid pressuring Ayla.

When they left, Ayla and Draven accompanied Kayla and Elizabeth to the courtyard. As Kayla prepared to give a few instructions, she let Draven go with her while Elizabeth stayed outside waiting.

“Wait a moment,” Draven said to Ayla.

She nodded.

Kayla led the way, walking a few steps to a corne of the corridor before stopping. Draven stood in front of her.

Kayla sized him up from head to toe, half with disdain.

Draven, long immune to her disapproval, remained expressionless. “What is it?”

Kayla was used to her son’s obstinate ways. She just smiled lightly and said, “Although you always make me angry, sometimes to the point wish I didn’t have a son like you… You and I are quite alike in one thing: your taste in peoples as poor as mine was when I was young.”

Draven’s expression darkened.

“Are you mad? Seems like you really like her,” Kala said, smiling. “I like Ayla too. She’s good in every way; I liked her at first sight. But the ong flaw is that she’s ‘Troy’s ex-wife.”

Before coming, Kayla had thoroughly investigated Ayla.

Draven’s voice turned icy, “So? You hold a prejudice?”

“Having a previous marriage doesn’t matter. I hold no prejudice. I’ve seen a lot in life, and I know that experience is valuable. As long as someone is kind and has redeeming qualities, I appreciate them. But she cannot be Troy’s ex-wife, do you understand? That identity bothers

me.”

Ayla hadn’t been eavesdropping intentionally, but she was close enough to hear.

She froze for a moment, then quietly walked away, missing the rest of the conversation.

Kayla continued, “You’re 28 and dating for the first time. Even if you chose someone ten years older, I could only accept it. Ayla is fine, but she can only be your first girlfriend. Experience dating, feel what love is like. If it doesn’t work out, you’ll know what dating feels like and can continue looking for someone I approve of for marriage…”

Draven suddenly interrupted, “Are you done?”

Kayla paused, looking at him.

“Who I date and who I marry is none of your business. Your standards are for yourself,” Draven said, meeting Kayla’s frown. “I’m no longer the child I used to be.”

Kayla looked at her son, feeling a strange unfamiliarity in him. Her gaze deepened as she questioned, “Do you love her?”

“She is my one true love,” Draven replied without hesitation.

Kayla was shocked. She looked for any sign of a lie.

In the past, when she disciplined Draven harshly, he would pretend to obey and deceive her. She could usually tell if he was being insincere.

But now, she saw no falsehood in his eyes. This wasn’t a calculated defiance or a harsh remark -it was real.

Kayla, unprepared for this, furrowed her brow. “You’ve only been together a month, and she’s your one true love? Don’t say things too soon, Daven. People change. Can you guarantee you won’t fall for someone else later?”

Draven remained expressionless, eyes cold. “I won’t.”

Kayla smiled lightly, not fully convinced and without mockery. She studied him curiously and asked, “Did you like her from the start?”

Kayla could only track back to three years ago, when Troy and Ayla married. Draven had seen her once at the wedding. Could it have bee love at first sight?

Kayla let out a small laugh. “Pathetic, you liked her that early and didn’t even try to take her from him?”

Draven’s expression stiffened. Indeed, he had asked himself the same. Why hadn’t he taken Ayla before she married Troy?

At the time, he didn’t know it was love. No one had taught him what love was. Having grown up without parents, he quietly endured whatever fate dealt him, never fought for anything because there was nothing he could claim.
