Draven saw the worry and care in her eyes. He shook his head. “Ayla, I’m fine. Go get some dessert. I’ll feel better soon.”
“I want to stay with you.” Ayla didn’t plan to leave. She always took illness seriously. Falling sick feels awful, and it helps when someone stays by your side.
Draven’s face stiffened, and then he sighed. “Alright.”
The doctor here was even more skilled than hers. His hands moved fast and efficiently. The cut didn’t look as deep as it first seemed. No stitches were needed. After cleaning and bandaging it, the doctor said it would heal in a few days.
“Don’t let it get wet. And definitely no swimming.”
Ayla felt much more relieved. She walked the doctor out.
Draven watched her rushing around for him. His lips pressed together without him noticing.
The cut on his arm meant nothing to him. He barely felt pain. But Ayla’s reaction made him feel guilty and disgusted with himself.
Just now, he had lost control. He had almost used this injury to …
To be honest, Draven had never felt confident in this relationship. And Troy was like a ticking time bomb.
The main reason Ayla hated Troy was because he was cold and heartless. But what if Troy changed?
Draven had known Troy since childhood. He understood him well. Just like Troy understood him.
When Troy confessed his love for Ayla, Draven knew it was real.
He didn’t need proof. He just knew.
Troy could tell, by instinct alone, that Draven used to act obedient and well–behaved just to win Martin’s love. When he was young, he had no parents protecting him. His world was harsh. He had no sense of safety. The only person who cared about him was Martin. So he had to try hard to be liked. He never had the right to be himself or lose his temper.
When he returned to the Storms, life became even harder. Draven had to protect himself, stay patient, and secretly plan ways to fight back. Scheming became part of who he was. He had always walked in the dark. His nature wasn’t something to be proud of.
Ayla’s kindness always hurt him.
But he wanted it more than anything.
Draven couldn’t stand the way Troy looked at Ayla with deep affection. He hated it even more when Troy confessed to her right in front of him.
Covering Ayla’s eyes had been pure instinct.

He had to stop them from looking at each other.
No one could take Ayla away from him. Maybe it wasn’t instinct. Maybe it was fear.
Draven trusted Ayla. He just didn’t trust himself. He was scared. Truly scared. He couldn’t stay calm.
No wonder loving someone could hurt this much.
When you love someone too much, first you fear losing them. Then you fear you’re not good enough. He was terrified that if Ayla saw his real self, she would hate him.
And honestly, the real him was ugly.
What should he do?
The only way was to make Ayla care about him more. That was why, even though he could have avoided Troy, he didn’t.
If he got hurt, Ayla would hate Troy more. She would also feel sorry for him.
Ayla had met Troy in private before, but she told him nothing. He could make use of this opportunity to make her promise to tell him next time.
The plan had been perfect.
Then, he saw Ayla pick up a fork for him and the worried look she had on her face.
Something inside him shook. And once again, he was stabbed by his sun.
How could I did something like that?
He couldn’t let Ayla do something so dangerous for him nor let her worry about him.
Maybe he had built a perfect image of himself in front of her. That was far too dangerous. What if she found out the truth one day?
Troy really did understand him. Draven could keep pretending for the rest of his life, but the guilt would crush him. His conscience wouldn’t let him live in peace.
Maybe he should just tell Ayla everything now. Ayla probably wouldn’t hate him that much, right?
Just then, his phone vibrated.
“Happy birthday to our future criminal, Draven.”
It was a birthday message from Jeremy, dripping with malice.
Draven stared hard at the phrase “future criminal.” It reminded him of the time he stabbed Jeremy without hesitation, using whatever means it took. What he had schemed tonight was ugly enough to make people dislike him. But he had an even darker side … How could Ayla possibly accept that?
