Chapter 553 The Trap Tightens

Ayla wasn’t sure if it was just her imagination, but the special cocktail was way too strong. Halle kept drinking glass after glass and looked totally fine, while Ayla already felt dizzy and light–headed.

“Getting drunk?” Halle asked when she noticed her.

“Maybe I’ve just been drinking too much these past few days,” Ayla said. Right after that, her phone rang. It was Iris. Private number. Ayla’s eyes darkened. She forced herself to stay steady and stepped outside to take the call.

She stopped at the corner of the hallway, looking at the open decorative space below.

“What is it?”

Iris was calling from her car. “Ms. Keaton, you told me to keep an eye on Fabiola. She’s at the same bar as you right now. Isn’t that too much of a coincidence?”

Ayla found out Fabiola was in Trensea and was even trying to target her. She couldn’t let it go. The feeling inside her was close to hatred because of Phil. She had asked Iris to keep watching Fabiola.

Was it curiosity about her half–sister? The itch to pry? To protect herself? Maybe all of it.

Because she only understood bits and pieces about her heartless father, she needed more information. She needed control.

In short, Ayla wanted to know exactly what Fabiola was planning.

At first, she made that decision without thinking too much. After Troy suddenly showed up at Draven’s birthday party a few days ago, she became even more sure. She hated being dragged into things. She hated feeling trapped. She couldn’t stand it anymore. So, she stopped running and decided to face everything head–on.

Not just Troy. Fabiola too.

From now on, she would take action first.

Now that Iris was reporting back, Ayla felt even more certain her decision was right.

“Anything else?” Ayla asked.

Iris hesitated, then said, “Not sure if it’s related, but I think I saw Jed.”

Fabiola. Jed. What could those two possibly have in common?

Ayla thought about this.

If they are connected, how?

Then it hit her. Brooke.

She didn’t know what role Fabiola played, but Brooke and Jed were definitely connected.

Brooke once said he misjudged her and told her not to take it to heart. If Brooke knew she had already divorced Troy, he wouldn’t have brought that up again.

Since he did, it meant he only knew she had been married to Troy, not that they were divorced. Because of this, he was apologizing nervously.

Then suddenly, her head spun harder. Her body felt weak and soft.

Did somebody set me up?

Ayla made a fast decision. “I think someone drugged me. Do this … and then … ”

After giving Iris quick instructions, she hung up.

A few minutes later, a waiter walked over. “Miss, are you drunk? Here’s some lemon tea.”

Ayla took it and drank. It didn’t help. If anything, she felt worse. Her legs started giving out. She stumbled, trying to make it back to her private room. Then someone suddenly grabbed her wrist.

She turned. It was Jed.

He let out a cold, creepy laugh. “Long time no see, Ayla. You’re doing pretty well for yourself now.”

After the brief shock, disgust filled her face. “Get lost.”

“You never pulled a long face at me before,” Jed said with a mocking smile. “Looks like after working so hard to win Mr. Winston’s heart, you’ve changed.” His voice was mocking, but his words sounded like he was begging. “I know you like Mr. Winston. I’m helping you be with him, Ayla.”

Ayla’s eyes turned cold. “Helping me?”

“I didn’t treat you well before. Now Mr. Winston doesn’t value me anymore. I need to find a way to move up.”

“And your way is drugging me and sending me to Troy’s bed?” she said. “That’s your idea of helping me?”

“I’m helping you and Mr. Winston get back together,” Jed said. “You were married before. Even if you’re divorced, couples fight and make up all the time. Honestly, I don’t get why Mr. Winston wastes so much effort. Just sleep together once. If you’re lucky, maybe you’ll even get pregnant-”

“Shut up!” Her eyes were sharp enough to cut.
