Chapter 880 Something Precious Slipping Away
His tone was thick with mockery.
Halle understood at once. Edgar had set her up.
With the elders present, she didn’t want to argue. She went to see Dakota first and carefully asked about her condition.
The episode had been dangerous. Pulling through was already a blessing. The doctor’s words were tactful, but the meaning was clear. At her age, they should let her recover peacefully, keep her happy, and be mentally prepared.
Halle knew Dakota wouldn’t pass right now. It would happen at some unknown point in the future. Birth, aging, sickness, and death were all part of ordinary human fate. Still, looking at the old woman’s face, Halle felt a genuine ache in her chest. She stayed and kept her company for a while.
Edgar, however, only thought Halle was good at putting on an act. His grandmother was old. Old people getting sick was normal. It wasn’t as if Halle had been especially close to her before. Putting on this grief now-wasn’t it just for his parents to see?
Edgar grew increasingly irritated. His expression looked awful.
He wanted to shout at her to stop pretending.
Halle stayed a little longer. Then, it was nearly time.
Maybe it was the old woman’s illness, that aged, irreversible face, that suddenly made Halle understand something. Everyone died. The time given to each person was limited. So, one should enjoy the life in front of them.
Halle had always been reluctant to let go of the past, still clinging to the beauty she remembered, desperate to keep it.
But in truth, it had ended long, long ago. Holding on this far hadn’t brought back the love and warnth from before. It had only left wreckage-and made everything uglier.
Halle forgave Edgar. What they had once shared had been good, but fundamentally, they walking the same path. Making it this far had already been difficult enough,

Halle decided to end it. There was no hatred, no grievance. She simply wanted to be happy and move forward.
So, Edgar’s little “traps” didn’t make her angry anymore.
You only get hurt by someone’s opinion when you still care. Halle didn’t care now. No matter what he did now, it no longer felt like it had anything to do with her.
Halle said formally. “Mr. and Mrs. Bowman, may I treat you both to dinner tomorrow night?”
Edgar frowned. “Why the sudden dinner?

Halle looked at Edgar. “This business trip was a little long. I brought back some gifts. I’ll give them to Mr. and Mrs. Bowman during dinner.”
Then, she invited Edgar “You can come, too.”
Edgar said nothing. He only felt that Halle was different. Her attitude was calm and gentle, without the sharpness he usually sensed from her.
Edgar stayed silent. He walked Halle out, and when they reached the hospital entrance, Halle said, “No need to see me off.”
Edgar replied, “I have things to do anyway. Go by yourself.”
As Edgar turned to leave, Halle suddenly called, “Edgar.”
Edgar froze. His heart slammed hard once. He turned back to look at Halle. The smile on her face seemed exactly the same as when they were kids.
Edgar’s heartbeat raced the way it had back then. But he no longer showed the awkward, boyish shyness and affection of those days. “What?”
Halle said, “Nothing. I just wanted to call your name.”
With that, Halle turned and walked away, free and unhurried.

Today, at the hospital, her softened attitude felt almost familiar-like that moment just now when she called him “Edgar.”
But then, she turned and left.
Any other day, Edgar shouldn’t have cared. It should have been completely ordinary. But in that moment. he felt as if something precious had finally moved beyond his reach.
He stood frozen, not knowing what to do. It was like back then, when he’d wanted to travel with Halle, only for her to tell him she was staying behind for an internship. Edgar had been just as los He stood there for more than ten seconds before slowly walking away.
As Edgar drove off, he thought he saw Nina’s car. He called her. “Did you come to the hospital?”
Nina said, “Bowie has a slight cold. I brought her to see a doctor. What’s wrong?”
Edgar’s stomach sank. “My parents can’t know about you and Bowie. Be careful.”
Nina tightened her grip on the steering wheel. “I know.”
Her voice was filled with sadness. Edgar softened and reassured her. “Don’t worry I won’t let you and your daughter suffer. Even if Halle and I get married one day, you and Bowie will sull be the people closest to me. Understand?”
“I understand.”

The call ended there.
Nina lowered the phone, a trace of mockery appearing on her face.
Edgar is still thinking about marrying Halle?
In the past, Nina would have thought Edgar was too stupid to see reality. But just now, watching him stare after Halle’s retreating figure for those dozens of seconds, she had seen something in his eyes-deep feeling and complexity he had never once shown her.

It wasn’t that Edgar was truly too stupid to notice Halle was leaving him. He had been lying to himself. fooling himself all along. He knew they had stopped walking the same path ages ago, but he didn’t dare face it. He kept running from reality, numbing himself instead.
Edgar did have feelings for Halle.
Understanding that made Nina feel genuinely awful. She couldn’t claim to be desperately in love with Edgar, but she still hoped he would truly love her and build a life with her.
With an unforgettable ex lodged in his heart, that was probably a fantasy.
Forget it. Nina sighed. She had already given birth to his child and endured all these years. Falling into resentment or self-pity over feelings now would be childish, a hopeless romantic’s mistake. Adults should focus on their goals and
interests.
Nina had to marry Edgar.
After leaving the hospital, Tyler had someone look into Edgar.
When the call came that night, Tyler thought he had misheard. After hanging up, he sat alone in his study in silence for a very, very long time.
It wasn’t until Hayley knocked and told him to sleep/that he moved.
Hayley saw how terrible he looked and grew worried. “What’s wrong? Did something happen?”
Tyler looked at his wife and, for once, asked, “Do you think I haven’t cared enough about Edgar?”
Hayley didn’t understand. “Why are you suddenly thinking about that? He’s grown. He doesn’t need us hovering over him. Look at Halle. Her parents barely care about her at all, and she turned out âne, didn’t she?”
Tyler didn’t want to say more. “Halle invited us to dinner tomorrow night. Prepare yourself. She’s going to break off the engagement.”
Once Halle made up her mind, she didn’t change it. So, when it came time to host dinner for Tyler and Hayley the next day, she began making arrangements.
She wondered briefly whether she should invite Edgar.
But she quickly gave up on the idea. Sometimes, people drift apart in silence. Not every goodbye needs a ceremony. Sometimes, you say goodbye once and don’t even realize it’ll be the last time.
Before, Halle had been fixated on the good old days. She couldn’t accept that Edgar had given up on them. That anger sat lodged in her throat, which was why she had never exposed Nina and kept hoping Edgar would apologize on his own.
