Chapter 881 The Last Dinner

Nina had to admit it had hurt

Finished

It wasn’t that Edgar was truly too stupid to notice Halle was leaving him. He had been lying to himself, fooling himself all along. He knew they had stopped walking the same path ages ago, but he didn’t dare face it. He kept running from reality, numbing himself instead.

Edgar did have feelings for Halle.

Understanding that made Nina feel genuinely awful. She couldn’t claim to be desperately in love with Edgar, but she still hoped he would truly love her and build a life with her..

With an unforgettable ex lodged in his heart, that was probably a fantasy.

Forget it. Nina sighed. She had already given birth to his child and endured all these years. Falling into resentment or self-pity over feelings now would be childish, a hopeless romantic’s mistake. Adults should focus on their goals and

interests.

Nina had to marry Edgar.

After leaving the hospital, Tyler had someone look into Edgar.

When the call came that night, Tyler thought he had misheard. After hanging up, he sat alone in his study in silence for a very, very long time.

It wasn’t until Hayley knocked and told him to sleep that he moved.

Hayley saw how terrible he looked and grew worried. “What’s wrong? Did something happen?” Tyler looked at his wife and, for once, asked, “Do you think I haven’t cared enough about Edgar?”

Hayley didn’t understand. “Why are you suddenly thinking about that? He’s grown. He doesn’t need us hovering over him. Look at Halle. Her parents barely care about her at all, and she turned out fine, didn’t she?”

Tyler didn’t want to say more. “Halle invited us to dinner tomorrow night. Prepare yourself. She’s going to break off the engagement.”

Once Halle made up her mind, she didn’t change it. So, when it came time to host dinner for Tyler and Hayley the next day, she began making arrangements.

She wondered briefly whether she should invite Edgar.

But she quickly gave up on the idea. Sometimes, people drift apart in silence. Not every goodbye needs a ceremony. Sometimes, you say goodbye once and don’t even realize it’ll be the last time

Before, Halle had been fixated on the good old days. She couldn’t accept that Edgar had given up on them. That anger sat lodged in her throat, which was why she had never exposed Nina and kept hoping Edgar would apologize on his own.

Chapter 881 The Last Dinner

Now that she’d figured it out, none of that mattered

Halle’s life had never been particularly dignified-her parents, her relationship, the mess she and Edgar had become…

But once she truly understood and let it go, no emotion was left.

She only owed Tyler and Hayley an explanation

Halle arrived early at the place she had reserved.

As she waited for Tyler and Hayley, memories from the past surfaced one by one.

When the time came, Tyler and Hayley arrived.

The two elders looked unchanged, but Halle knew Tyler was a very smart man. He simply hadn’t said anything.

So, Halle chatted with them about ordinary things-about her childhood, about what she had felt back then. She thanked them for their care and affection, for giving her a childhood that had at least been happy in parts and full of warmth.

Halle had become glib and polished in the business world over the years. But around those close to her. she turned back into the little girl from long ago.

Hayley listened and cried.

Partly because her heart ached for Halle, and partly because she understood why Halle was saying all of this.

She understood even more clearly now how exceptional Halle was, and how hard her path had been. Tyler remained silent the whole time, only nodding occasionally.

Toward the end, Halle’s eyes reddened, too. She drank with Ter, letting herself be emotional for once.

“Mr. and Mrs. Bowman, even though we won’t become family now, you will always be important to me. I’ll still come to see you often. If you ever need anything, come to me anytime. I’ll always be here.”

Hayley couldn’t hold it in anymore. Her tears kept falling

Tyler was quiet for several seconds. Then, he lifted his glass and drained it. “All right.”

Halle smiled at once. “Mr. and Mrs. Bowman, thank you for supporting me. Thank you for not blaming me for keeping this from you.”

Hayley choked out, “How could we blame you for hiding it? We failed you. We didn’t notice sooner

Halle said, “None of that matters now. It’s okay.”

Tyler suddenly said, “Halle, you are a good girl. You don’t want to hold grudges, but Edgar still owes you ✯ formal apology.”
