When Ayla was alone, she finally let her guard slip without falling apart or losing her head. In front of her staff, she still had to look like the boss.

That was exactly why she loved working. She wanted to use reason to control her emotions instead of drowning in them.

Ten minutes.

Just give me ten minutes.

James realized Ayla had misunderstood everything and panicked. He kept calling her, but none of the calls went through. Meanwhile, the guy who’d caused the mess still had no idea what he’d done. “What’s wrong?”

James shot him a murderous glare. “Shut up.”

He stepped away and sent a message, “Ayla, there’s no such thing as a strategic marriage. Don’t overthink it!”

Even so, it didn’t feel convincing enough. James considered secretly taking a photo of Draven and sending it to her as proof. But the moment he raised his phone, Draven’s eyes met the camera, and he walked straight over.

“What are you doing?” Draven stared at the phone.

Caught on the spot, James could only drag Draven to a quiet corner and explain everythi Draven’s expression darkened visibly. James rushed out, “I already texted Ayla to explain. I just going to take a photo of you to prove you’re not planning some strategic marriage.”

“Don’t send her my photo,” Draven said, his frown deepening.

“Why?” James didn’t believe they were really done. “You’re not actually going to marry for business, are you? Just cut Ayla off like that? And why did you even break up?”

“Ask Herman,” Draven replied flatly. “Ayla is trying to calm herself down. Seeing my face will only make things worse. Let her get through this quietly. Don’t bring up our breakup again.”

James could tell Draven was trying to protect her. “Then what about this strategic marriage

rumor?”

Draven lifted his gaze toward Kayla, who stood in the middle of the crowd, his eyes cold. “Yeah. I’d also like to know what that’s about.”

James knew Draven would never agree to that. “Your mom has connections everywhere, and she’s rushing things. She really worries about you.”

Draven pressed his lips together, clearly uninterested in responding.

James studied him carefully. Something felt wrong. Draven had always been distant, but now there was a heavy, shadowy edge to him-something darker and harder to read.

It wasn’t hard to understand. Draven took love seriously. Once he got together with Ayla, he probably never imagined they’d end things. That kind of blow would shake anyone. And since he wasn’t the type to drink with friends and vent, everything just stayed bottled up. Anyone would change under that pressure.

“You two were so good together,” James said. “How did it end like this? It doesn’t even look like you stopped loving each other.”

Draven didn’t want to talk about it, but James wouldn’t let it go. Finally, he answered, “Because of the kids.”

After James heard the full story, his first urge was to march over and beat Troy senseless. Once the shock wore off, and he finished cursing Troy out, he asked, “So, what are you going to do

next?”

Draven lowered his eyes. A sharp, dangerous glint flickered through his gaze. “I’ll wait.”

James couldn’t think of a better option either. Waiting felt the same as doing nothing. And nothing changed, that meant a clean break. How would they ever get back together?

James liked Ayla. If they really ended things for good, it would be awkward for everyone. She might be a workaholic, but she was also fun and good at just about everything.

He wanted to ask more and offer advice.

But Kayla was preparing to leave, and Draven went with her.

Zheron was the center of Drakoria’s politics. Wealth and power were deeply intertwined here. For top families, the most valuable resource wasn’t money-it was connections. That was why old-money families were powerful yet low-key, with deep roots and vast networks.

Though the older generation of the Storms had stepped back, many of their in-laws still held
