Divorce Me I'm Done Serving You (Ayla and Troy) novel Chapter 855

Halle ignored his nonsense and asked curiously, "Then what exactly do you think marriage should look like?"

Halle had dealt with all kinds of people for years, and no one had ever said there was something wrong with her personality. No one had ever asked her to change who she was or change the way she lived.

Instead, other people usually changed themselves to match her preferences.

For example, James. At first, he was a rough kind of guy. Even though he wore expensive designer brands, his clothes were mostly simple jackets picked for convenience. They looked fine, but they had no style. Now he understood fashion better. His whole style changed a lot. Now he looked like a classy and fashionable rich young man.

Of course, Halle thought that kind of change was a good thing.

So, she really wanted to see what Edgar expected from her after all these years.

Edgar said, "If we're getting married, we'll have to spend time around our families. You should care more about my feelings like you used to. Stand by my side. Speak up for me. We should cover for each other so that the elders won't worry about us. And when needed, you should help me. But now, all you do is go against me."

Halle nodded in understanding. "So... I should pay more attention to your feelings, care about your emotions, comfort you whenever you're upset. And if something goes wrong, we clean up the mess together."

Edgar didn't think there was anything wrong with that at all. "Exactly. That's what women are supposed to do. Women should be gentle and supportive, standing behind their man."

A moment ago, Halle thought they had nothing to talk about because Edgar didn't understand her humor. Their conversations felt stiff and awkward, so they could never really connect. But now she realized the real problem was that their way of thinking had become completely different.

Edgar's way of thinking was old-fashioned and outdated. He liked women who acted sweet and dependent, women who comforted him and looked up to him. Of course, plenty of people still thought that way, but Halle had never expected Edgar to be one of them.

No wonder he and Nina got together. Nina had that soft and delicate look, and her gentle personality made men want to protect her.

Halle wasn't saying she never needed protection from others. When necessary, she and Ayla supported each other and worked together. But being protected every second of the day? She didn't need that at all. In fact, many people at her company depended on her instead. There was no way Halle could meet Edgar's expectations, and she knew she could never become the kind of woman he wanted.

Halle didn't answer him directly. Instead, she asked, "Okay, I understand what you want from me. But I'm curious—what can you do for me? A relationship goes both ways. I need to see your sincerity too."

Edgar wasn't like this before. How had he gotten worse instead of better?

Halle said, "I need to know what you're willing to do first before we keep talking."

Edgar snapped, "Halle, I seriously can't stand you anymore! How did you become so cold and heartless? You can't even do a little for me or think about my feelings? Are my requests really that unreasonable?"

Halle laughed. "You won't even show any sincerity, but you expect me to agree to everything! I'm not interested in a deal where only I lose out. Why should I be the only one making compromises while you give me nothing in return?"

Edgar said, "Everything I'm doing right now still isn't enough for you?! What exactly are you unhappy about?"

This had started as a normal conversation, but Edgar kept turning everything back onto himself. It sounded like he was asking questions, but really, he was full of self-doubt.

The moment she questioned him, Edgar immediately thought she was attacking him. If he couldn't even talk about things calmly and reasonably, then how could they keep having a conversation?

Halle looked at him for a moment. "Forget it. I'm not unhappy with you either. Let's stop talking about this. Call your parents today and discuss the wedding plans. Then move back home for the next couple of days."
