Luckily, Herman didn't know what Blake was thinking right now. If he did, he would probably cry himself to sleep. Too bad for him to fall for someone so emotionally clueless.
...
Blake's period came right on schedule during the business trip.
The pain was so bad that it made her whole body tremble. Her lower abdomen felt like someone was drilling into it, twisting it hard, as if they wouldn't stop until everything inside was torn apart.
Blake originally planned to take painkillers and still attend the business dinner. That was how she had always pushed through before.
But this time, the pain was unbearable. And there was a bigger problem—she was bleeding too much. It was like she was hemorrhaging. She had to change her pad every hour.
Because she lost too much blood, her hands and feet went numb and weak, and her vision kept going dark. In this condition, there was no way she could force herself to work. She had no choice but to stay at the hotel.
When Blake woke up again, she was in a hospital.
Kaia was standing beside her, looking worried.
Blake felt completely drained. "What happened to me?"
Kaia said, "Ms. Pope, you fainted in the hotel. There was blood all over under you."
Blake tried to picture it, but she still couldn't connect it to herself. She'd always been fine before—so how could she suddenly be bleeding this much?
She stayed calm and asked, "What did the doctor say?"
Kaia replied, "The doctor checked you. It's a uterine fibroids causing heavy bleeding, and the fibroid is pretty large. The doctor recommends you get surgery as soon as possible."
Blake's first thought was: wouldn't surgery mess up her work schedule?
She asked, "Is surgery really necessary?"
Kaia replied, "That's what the doctor said. They strongly recommend it."
Blake stayed quiet, thinking it over.
At that moment, her phone rang.
She reached out, but even that simple movement felt weak.
So annoying.
Kaia looked at it. "It's Mr. Howell calling."
Blake immediately thought of that fussy man. If he found out she'd been hospitalized, who knew how dramatic he'd get? She didn't feel like dealing with it. She said, "Forget it. I'm not picking up."
Kaia had always admired Blake. She was tough and unshakable. Kaia had never met anyone like her.
Blake had worked hard to rise above her background and build a better life. More importantly, she had sharpened her own abilities. She was strong, sharp, and carried a powerful presence.
Every time she spoke, her voice was steady and confident, giving off the clear energy of a top-tier, powerful career woman. Blake was the kind of person Kaia wanted to become.
But no matter what, health came first.
Kaia tried to persuade her. "Ms. Pope, you can't keep going like this."
Blake knew she was worried. "Don't worry. I know what I'm doing. Call the doctor over. I want to understand my condition."
Kaia still wasn't reassured. "Are you really not going to take Mr. Howell's call?"
Blake suddenly wondered if Kaia had noticed something between her and Herman.
They were both on business trips in different places. He could've just called to talk her into it. Instead, he flew over in person. Mr. Howell was really too kind!
Mr. Howell really did care about Ms. Pope.
