The study door was closed, and Kaleb couldn’t get it open.

Ayla said, “It’s locked with biometric access.”

Her research involved tons of documents and references. Even though she trusted Meryll, she wasn’t about to leave her study open for anyone to walk in.

Kaleb looked over the door and spotted a tiny, nearly invisible camera in the frame. The second Ayla stepped in front of it, the door clicked open automatically. It responded in under a second-smooth and precise.

Kaleb stared in disbelief. Anything that was this precise did not work that fast. The vice versa was true, at get that system? Send me

the link.”

Ayla walked inside. “I modified it. I made the recognition sharper. You can’t buy it anywhere.”

Kaleb said nothing.

He’d been impressed before, but stepping into her study left him completely stunned.

The room was over 300 square feet-huge for a study. An entire wall was filled from floor to ceiling with shelves packed full of research materials.

Even more impressive were the four massive monitors and the compact home supercomputer. That model alone cost millions and had insane computing power.

Kaleb shot a look at Ayla.

Ayla didn’t notice his expression. She pointed toward the desk. “Set it down there.”

Kaleb followed her directions and placed the bag down. The

he grabbed a file from the side and read the

“Remote Intelligence Agent Research.” He blinked, his head already starting to ache. “What even is this?”

Ayla said, “My research focuses on space exploration.”

“Stop. Don’t bother. I don’t get any of that.”

Ayla still went on. “It’s not as complicated as it sounds. I’m optimizing obstacle-avoidance algorithms. Think of a Mars rover-or remote surgery, where a camera captures precise data from the surgical site. Because signals in deep space face delays and interference, we need multiple intelligent agents working together to compensate.”

Kaleb replied lazily, “Sure, I get it.”

Ayla went quiet.

He didn’t get it at all. But he had a feeling Ayla had chosen that field because of their mother. Juliana worked in aerospace research too.

Since he wasn’t interested, Ayla dropped the subject. “Come on. I’ll show you your room.”

Kaleb blinked. “My room?”

“Yeah,” Ayla said. “The one I saved for you. It’s the smallest one.”

Kaleb frowned, pretending to be annoyed. But as he followed her, something warm flickered inside him.

She actually thinks about me.

At least she cares.

The room Ayla prepared for him was smaller than her study but still large, with a spacious bathroom attached.

On the nightstand sat a framed photo of Kaleb as a toddler, wearing training pants.

His face darkened. He grabbed the frame, turned it face down, then pulled the drawer open and shoved it inside.

Ayla looked calm. “Everything you need is here. You know the code. Come by whenever you want.”

Kaleb scoffed. “Today’s an exception. Who’d want to come here anyway?”

Ayla smirked. “Fine. Suit yourself. Having one less loudmouth around might help me live longer.”

Kaleb didn’t say anything, but curiosity took over. It was his first time there, and he wanted to see everything.

He walked into Ayla’s bedroom, the main bedroom. The floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the Trensea skyline. He actually liked it. He stood there for a while, staring at the city lights, then moved on.

He noticed a moon-shaped ornament on her vanity and mocked her for having such awful taste. Ayla’s glare hit him like a knife more than once.

The apartment had several guest rooms, a home theater, and a gym. When he stepped out onto the balcony, he found a small private pool-something only the top-floor residents had. After checking the whole place, Kaleb had to admit he liked it.

One of the guest rooms had been turned into an art studio. When Ayla felt stressed or stuck on her research, she painted to clear her mind.
