Draven and Ayla could land here now because both of them had been willing to grow. That closeness had been built, inch by inch.
And it had everything to do with those four months apart.
Though maybe if Draven had fought for her right away, things would've unfolded differently, too. Differently didn't mean worse.
Either way, everything happened for a reason. Look for the good in it, and you'll stop picking apart the pain and the regret.
"Ayla, if I'd never met you, I wouldn't know where I fell short. Because of you, I understand myself better. And I've actually become a better version of myself." Draven's eyes were lowered, his gaze quiet and certain beneath those long lashes. He wasn't afraid anymore that Ayla would find the real him ugly or repulsive. He was completely, fully open to her now.
He could also feel it clearly—that because of the way he'd changed, Ayla was closer to him, more relaxed, warmer.
It only made him want to take better care of her, cherish her more, rather than asking her to go on accommodating him.
Draven loved looking after Ayla. He wanted to spoil her until she was fearless, until she had no walls left with him—just enjoying her life, happy.
Ayla was curious, too. "Do you ever blame me for being the one who suggested we break up?"
"How could I blame you? I didn't do well enough—that's why you lost confidence in me." The thought of those four months he'd spent barely registering Ayla's existence, paralyzed by childhood wounds, made him feel sick. His chest still tightened with it.
He was so afraid he'd really lost her. Afraid he hadn't protected her properly...
But he hadn't made the worst mistake.
If anything had gone differently, Draven didn't know if he could have lived with it.
"I almost lost my wife," he said, his voice dropping. "If I don't try harder, I won't have a wife at all. Right now, all I want is for you to feel steady. To have faith in me."
He looked at Ayla listening quietly to him, and he just couldn't help himself. He leaned in and kissed her on the cheek.
She wiped at her face immediately, wearing that adorable "did you just sneak a kiss again" expression. His mouth curved up before he could stop it.

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
