Chapter 81 Max’s Irritation

Max felt something coil tight in his chest when Troy spoke. He did not know if it was because he finally understood Ayla or because he already braced himself for a fallout with Troy.

He forced the feeling down and called Rolf with sharp impatience. “Get over here fast, or I’m going to drown in all this cheesy flirting.”

Skyla perked up right away, and her mood brightened.

Max kept a lazy smile on his face and stayed quiet.

He always knew how to say things that made people feel good.

People said he sounded gentle and charming. They said he could flirt with anyone and walk away without a scratch.

The ones who watched him longer said he felt frozen inside and barely cared about anyone he met.

They just liked painting him as the bad guy.

Max never argued with any of it. He could care about people, or he could not care at all. It always depended on whatever mood he woke up in that day.

Skyla watched him with suspicion because something felt off.

Max agreed to meet James, so she could not figure out why he only called Rolf.

She kept her questions to herself because she knew Max would catch her thoughts in a second.

He was smart.

There were two entrances, one at each end of the courts.

Ayla entered from the west side after James messaged her, so she bumped straight into Troy.

James and the others came from the east side, which kept them apart.

There were many courts, and two were joined.

The courts sat side by side inside metal fencing. Ayla stepped inside and spotted Draven and James pulling out their rackets. She also noticed Blake, her department chief, standing nearby.

Ayla walked up to them. She said, “Boss, I didn’t expect you here.”

Blake said, “Do you know how to play?”

Ayla opened her mouth, but James jumped in fast.

James threw a pointed look at Draven to see how he reacted. Draven stayed silent, but Ayla’s gaze shifted toward him instead.

Draven wore a gray tennis outfit that fit him too well. His build made him look like he walked out of an old-money sports club.

Tennis started out as a sports for aristocrats.

And Draven looked the part.

Ayla started to look away when his eyes suddenly locked onto hers.

She lifted her chin to greet him, but he cut in first.

He said, “If you can’t play, go hire a coach. Don’t get in the way here.”

Ayla froze at that icy tone.

Blake went quiet as well.

Draven never talked like that unless he felt familiar with someone.

Ayla probably did well during the charity dinner.

Blake studied Ayla with a steady look that carried hidden approval. Her face stayed stern as she said, “If you can’t play, then I can’t partner with you. Mr. Storm likes tennis. You have to learn so you can join him when he comes out to train.”

Ayla paused because it sounded like tennis was now part of her job.

And it sounded important.

Many executives wanted assistants who could handle their hobbies.

If their assistants couldn’t do anything, they wouldn’t bring them along again.

Playing along with the boss was something employees had to learn.

Blake’s intent finally made sense. She wanted to train her.

James opened his mouth, but Draven hit him with a cold stare. He said, “You. Play with me.”

James shot back, “No. Ayla can’t play, and I actually want to teach her. Herman and Will are coming. Call

them.”

Draven said nothing. James ignored him and walked toward Ayla.

He said, “Let me show you the basics.”

Ayla said, “Just start. I’ll follow.”

Draven looked at her again when she said that.

James missed it and began to demonstrate swings step by step. His form looked sharp, and his instructions were easy to absorb.

James said, “It’s tough at first. You need a lot of practice. Relax. I’m better than most coaches. I’ll teach you from now on.”

Ayla walked to the opposite side of the court.

James called out, “Ayla, why did you go that far? How am I supposed to teach from here?”

Ayla picked up a tennis ball and bounced it to test the weight.

Her movements were smooth like she had done this a thousand times. She tossed the ball upward.

Her knees bent, and she pushed up into the swing as the racket cracked through the air.

The ball rocketed straight toward James, and he froze instead of reacting. His arm moved late, and the ball shot past him.

Draven stepped behind him, lifted his racket, and sent the ball flying back with sharp force. Ayla moved across the court with quick, steady steps, and she caught his return cleanly. The ball moved between them in a fast rally.

Ayla flicked her wrist and sent a high looping shot over Draven’s head.

The ball dropped in, and she won the point.

James stared at her like his brain stopped working.

James turned to Blake. He said, “She calls that not knowing how to play?”
