Chapter 11
“What did she say?!” Nicholas stared at her, his gaze locked in place.
Brittany lifted her tear-filled eyes, resentment written all over her face. “She said the thing she regrets most in this lifetime is being blind enough to fall in love with you!”
Nicholas felt as if he had been struck by a heavy blow. He staggered back two steps and let
Brittany rubbed her swollen wrist and choked out, “Go look for her then! Go to the Calhoun’s villa and look! See if she’s willing to see you!”
Yes, the Calhoun’s villa! She was a daughter of the Calhoun family. After the divorce, she would surely have returned to the Calhoun’s villa!
As if grasping at his last straw of hope, Nicholas charged back into the curtain of rain.
The gates of the Calhoun’s villa were tightly shut.
The one who opened the door was Katherine’s brother, the eldest son of the Calhoun family, Giovanny Calhoun.
His eyes were cold as ice as he blocked Nicholas at the door.
“Mr. Padilla,” Giovanny said distantly, “Katie has nothing to do with you anymore. Please leave.”
“Gio!” Nicholas pleaded urgently. “Let me see Katie! I have to see her! I know I was wrong. I’ll make it up to her. I’ll spend my whole life treating her well! I beg you, just let me see her once!”
“Gio?” Giovanny let out a scornful laugh. “Mr. Padilla, I can’t accept that name. When my father was gravely ill and near death, Katie wanted to come home, but you forced her to stay in your house under the excuse that there was no one else to look after things, just so she could care for your precious Ms. Lester. And what was the result? My father never got to see his daughter one last time before he died!”
He stepped forward, his gaze sharp as a blade. “She has now severed all ties with you. You have nothing to do with her anymore. Where she went, we don’t know. Even if we did-”
He stared at Nicholas’s deathly pale face, enunciating every word. “We would not tell you.”
With a loud bang, the gate slammed shut in front of him.

gate that symbolized rejection and
separation, and for the first time, he understood clearly-
Katherine truly did not want him anymore.
She had cut off all contact and vanished completely from his life, refusing to give him even the slightest chance to make amends.
Three days later, at the largest tavern in New York.
Nicholas lay slumped in a corner, empty bottles scattered and rolling at his feet.
His clothes were rumpled, his beard unkempt, his eye sockets sunken. There was no trace left of his former noble, aloof demeanor.
The door was shoved open violently as his close friend Vance Stewart strode in. Seeing Nicholas like this, Vance frowned deeply and stepped forward, grabbing him by the collar. “Nicholas! Look at what you’ve turned yourself into!”
Nicholas’s eyes were glassy with drink as he murmured, “Katie… my Katie is gone…”
So enraged that the veins at his temples throbbed, Vance swung his fist and landed a brutal punch squarely on Nicholas’s face!
“Who are you putting on this pathetic show for?!”
Nicholas’s head snapped to the side from the blow. Blood seeped from the corner of his mouth, yet he only wiped it away numbly.
Vance kept hold of his collar and cursed furiously. “I’ve wanted to hit you for a long time! Katherine was such a good woman. How she treated you these past five years-those of us on the outside saw it clearly! She gave you her whole heart, would have given you her life if she could! And you? You tore out her heart and ground it into pieces under your feet!”
“Samantha sheds a single tear, and you lose your soul! Katherine coughs up blood and faints, and you make her walk home alone in the rain! Is your heart made of stone?!”
Nicholas’s eyes were hollow, utterly unresponsive.
Vance got even angrier and slammed him hard into the wall: “Do you remember last winter? You caught a bad cold, and the fever wouldn’t go down. Katherine stayed up with you for three days and three nights, no sleep. She collapsed with a high fever herself, and she was still afraid you’d worry, so she forced herself to hold on and wouldn’t let anyone tell you! What were you doing? You were with Samantha!”

“Everyone says you love Samantha, but from what I see, you’re just stupid beyond saving!”
“Do you know whose name you call every time you get drunk and cling to me? It’s ‘Katie’! When you came back from Nashville, you deliberately took a three-day detour just to bring Katherine that gold-plated bracelet. You said you thought it would look good on her!”
Vance closed in on him, teeth clenched. “Nicholas, search your conscience. Do you really not love Katherine? You fell in love with her long ago-down to the bone! You’re just stupid! Blind! Clutching that unattainable obsession from your youth like a treasure, you personally shoved the woman who truly loved you-and whom you also loved-straight into hell!”
