Chapter 12
Every single word was like a red-hot branding iron, searing itself viciously into Nicholas’s heart.
All the details he had deliberately ignored and turned a blind eye to came crashing over him like a raging tide-
the
way she nodded off from exhaustion while staying up late to knit him a scarf, the bright, expectant sparkle in her eyes when she learned a new dish and waited eagerly for him to taste it; the way she curled up in his arms when she was sick, whispering softly, “Honey, I feel awful” with utter dependence; and that day she went to the prison, the light in her eyes completely extinguished…
So it turned out that those habits long fused into his bones, those unconscious acts of concern, that inexplicable irritation whenever he saw her being close to someone else…
were not guilt, not responsibility, but love.
He had long since fallen in love with the woman who, over five years, had slowly warmed him and seeped into his life.
Yet he had loved her without ever realizing it.
He had even pushed her away with his own hands, hurting her beyond all repair.
“Ah-!!!”
Nicholas clutched his head violently, letting out a beast-like howl as tears mixed with blood
streamed down.
He was wrong.
So disastrously wrong, so absurdly wrong!
“I’m going to find her…” Nicholas jerked his head up, his eyes bloodshot, crazed and despairing. “I’m going to bring her back… I’ll kneel down and beg her forgiveness… I’ll pay her back with my life!”
Vance looked at him like this, feeling both hatred and pity.
He loosened his grip and said in a low voice, “Where are you going to look? The world is vast. If she’s determined to hide from you, how will you ever find her?”

“I’ll turn this city upside down, even if it costs me everything, I’ll find her!” Nicholas roared.
Vance fell silent for a moment, then said, “Before that, there’s something I think you need to know.”
He lowered his voice. “I’ve heard some rumors lately about Samantha and her ex-husband. Her ex has been going around complaining to everyone, saying he wasn’t the one who betrayed Samantha at all, but that Samantha… had an affair and was caught in bed with another man by him, which led to the divorce.”
Nicholas’s pupils constricted violently as he snapped his gaze toward Vance.
“If you truly want to get Katherine back, you’d better clean up the mess around you first.” Vance patted his shoulder. “Go find out. Get two things straight: first, where Katherine actually went; second, what kind of thing Samantha really is.”
Nicholas almost immediately mobilized every resource he could command.
To investigate Katherine’s whereabouts, and to dig into Samantha’s background.
The results of the investigation into Samantha plunged him into an icy abyss.
All that so-called “fragility,” “pitifulness,” and “helplessness” he had once believed in without question concealed such sordid calculations and lies beneath.
Even the child she claimed to have lost had never existed at all-it was highly likely fabricated by her to win his sympathy and drive a wedge between him and Katherine!
When Nicholas returned home, carrying a chill about him, Samantha was doing her makeup, clearly in high spirits.
Seeing him come back, she immediately put on a worried, delicate expression and went to greet
him.
“Nick, you’re back? Why do you look so pale? Are you still upset about Katie?” She reached out. to tug at his sleeve, her voice gentle as she tried to console him. “Don’t be too anxious. Katie just had a moment of confusion. Once she calms down and realizes how good you are to her, she’ll definitely come back. She’s loved you so deeply all these years-how could she really bear to leave…”
“Enough.” Nicholas flung her hand away violently, the force sending Samantha stumbling back two steps.
She looked up in shock and met Nicholas’s terrifyingly blood-red eyes, churning with a rage and disgust she had never seen before.

“Nick, what’s wrong with you…” Panic rose in Samantha’s chest as she forced a smile. “Did I say something wrong? Don’t be angry,
I…”
“What is that smell on you?” Nicholas suddenly stepped closer, staring at her intently.
Samantha’s eyes flickered. “N-no, it’s nothing, just some ordinary scented candles…”
“I’m asking you, what did you put in it?!” Nicholas growled, grabbing her wrist.
Samantha cried out in pain, tears instantly welling up. Seeing his frightening expression, she dared not hide it anymore and sobbed, “It’s… it’s an aphrodisiac incense… Nick, Katie’s gone, I just wanted to… to take her place and keep you company. I’m willing to be with you too…”
