Nicholas flinched at the warmth in her smile. It stung him. That uncomfortable feeling in his chest grew heavier, mixed with a trace of jealousy he didn’t even realize he had.
“How important is it-” he started to ask, wanting to press her further. But Samantha suddenly let out a weak, pained groan and clutched his sleeve tightly.
“Nick… can we leave already? My head is spinning. I just want to go back and lie down…” she begged softly.
Nicholas glanced at Katherine. In the end, he swallowed whatever he was about to say and only said in a hurry, “Be careful on your way home.”
Then he helped Samantha into the car and shut the door, cutting Katherine off like she was on the outside of a sealed world.
The car drove away and quickly disappeared into the rain.
.
Katherine stayed where she was. Cold rain struck her skin, but it was like she couldn’t even feel the chill anymore. She only lowered her head and gently rubbed the bracelet between her fingers.
The three of them had grown up together, practically inseparable since childhood.
She liked Nicholas. But in Nicholas’s eyes, there had only ever been Samantha.
Then later, Samantha accepted another man’s proposal.
The whole city erupted, and everyone called Samantha heartless and shameless.
To protect her reputation, Samantha went to Nicholas in tears. “Nick, you’re wonderful. In this lifetime, I’ll never meet another man who treats me as well as you do. But being moved isn’t the same as falling in love. I can’t be with you. This time, the public opinion is against me. For the sake of the love you once had for me… could you help me again? Please?”
Nicholas’s heart was ripped apart, but he still did it.
To protect Samantha’s name, he proposed to Katherine, the woman who had always loved him, and announced publicly that he and Samantha had both found love elsewhere. That way, no one could accuse her of betraying him.
Katherine knew he was marrying her for Samantha. Yet, she married him anyway.

On their wedding night, he was drunk out of his mind. When he took her to bed, the name he whispered wasn’t hers. It was “Sammy.”
After that, he stayed gloomy for a long time, and Katherine gave him everything she had.
When his appetite was bad, she learned dish after dish, trying anything that might tempt him.
Year after year passed. Eventually, he finally started smiling at her. He began bringing home gifts on her birthday. When she got sick, he would sit by her bedside.
She thought life would slowly get better.
It wasn’t until five years later that Samantha got divorced.
She still seemed just like before, always caught in trouble, and Nicholas still seemed just like before, too, running to her side every time. Then, because Samantha said, “If I stay with my parents, people will gossip,” he brought her straight into his own home.
Katherine endured it.
When she found out she was pregnant, she was overjoyed and rushed to tell him. Samantha was standing nearby, listening, and a single tear slid down her cheek.
Nicholas immediately went to comfort Samantha. When he came back, he actually handed Katherine a bottle of misoprostol.
He said, “Katie, Sammy was pregnant before, too, but that heartless man forced her to end it. Seeing you pregnant makes her suffer. Let’s not keep this baby for now. Once she gets past this, we’ll try again. Okay?”
atherine felt like she’d been struck by lightning. She dropped to her knees and begged him, ling him it was their child.
But he just soothed her gently. “We can have kids in the future.”
And then he forced the pills down her throat with his own hands.
She felt like her heart was being ripped apart, and she completely broke down, but that very same day, she and Samantha were abducted by the same group of criminals.
At the edge of a cliff, the abductors told him to choose one.
And Nicholas still chose Samantha.
As Katherine fell, she thought it would be better to die.

But she lived.
When she opened her eyes, a stranger had saved her.
He was strikingly handsome, with an elegant, untouchable presence that didn’t belong to an ordinary man.
She thanked him and offered money. However, he laughed and said, “I don’t need money. But I do need a wife. How about you repay me with yourself?”
She told him she was already married.
He raised his brows. “That’s what I like. Get divorced and then marry me.”
She thought he was joking. But he placed a bracelet in her hand, and his expression turned serious. “I’ll give you a few days to divorce. When you’re done, take this bracelet and come find me in Nashville.”
She had no idea what he wanted. With his looks, his status, and his confidence, why would he want a woman who’s already married like her?
But her heart toward Nicholas had already turned to ash. Leaving him was exactly what she wanted.
So she accepted the bracelet and said, “Okay.”
When she returned home, the first thing she did was dig out the divorce agreement Nicholas had written years ago while drunk.
That night, he had learned Samantha was suffering and drowned himself in alcohol.
In that haze, he scribbled out the divorce papers. By morning, he probably forgot, or maybe he simply never cared. The paper had been tossed aside, lost in some corner of the house.
But Katherine, who still loved him at the time, had found it. Heartbroken, she hid it at the bottom of the deepest drawer, like she was hiding an open wound that would never heal.
Now, that wound had become the key to her freedom.
She took the divorce agreement written in his own handwriting and went to the courthouse.
All she had to do was wait until the end of the month. Once the process was complete and the paperwork became official, she would have nothing to do with Nicholas anymore.
