Chapter 8
Katherine didn’t look at him again. She turned away and instructed Brittany and the other maids, “Pack my things and move fast. Don’t delay Ms. Lester from moving in.”
Her speed was almost shocking. In less than half an hour, she had gathered what little she owned and moved into the most remote part of the house-an attic that had been empty for years.
It was cramped and worn down, not even a third the size of her original room.
After everything was moved, Katherine walked back to Nicholas, who was still standing there stunned, and to Samantha, who was smiling with satisfaction. She said, “Oh, right. Since you say Ms. Lester isn’t an outsider, then from now on, let her manage all household assets as well.”
As she spoke, she opened the safe, took out several sets of documents, and handed them over.
Nicholas snapped back to himself. His facial expression changed immediately. “Katie! What are you doing? You can’t just hand these over like that!”
But Samantha’s eyes lit up. She tugged on Nicholas’ sleeve and said sweetly, “Nick… I’ve always wanted to learn how to handle finances, too. And aren’t we preparing for the banquet soon? Can you let me
let me try? Just this once?”

He looked at her eager face, then at Katherine’s calm, emotionless expression. His heart wrestled in silence.
“Nick…” Samantha’s eyes filled with tears again, as if she might cry

Nicholas softened. In the end, he sighed and said to Katherine, “If Sammy wants to learn, let her try for now, then. You can guide her from the side.”
He still chose to allow it.
Katherine wasn’t surprised in the least.
She nodded, placed the keys into Samantha’s hand, then turned away and left the house she had lived in for five years.
Nicholas watched her walk away, and that strange panic in his chest surged again, stronger than ever before.
Instinctively, he wanted to chase after her, say something, or do something.

But Samantha caught his arm and happily played with the papers in her hand. “Nick, look! I can finally help you!”
Seeing her smile, Nicholas stopped.
He told himself that Katherine loved him too much and had given him too much. This was just a tantrum, and nothing would really change.
And once some time passed, he could simply coax her again and compensate her.
So in the end, he didn’t chase her.
After that, Samantha turned the household into chaos.
Bills got messy, and maids complained. Purchases were cheap, careless, and full of substitutions. Nicholas wasn’t blind. He knew. But every time Samantha pouted or cried, his heart softened, and he let it go, only telling the butler to be more patient.
In her small courtyard, Katherine listened to Brittany complaining in frustration. She only smiled faintly and never commented.
Then came the day of the Padilla family banquet. Samantha deliberately sent someone to deliver a message. She said that this was her stage. She hoped Katherine wouldn’t attend, so Katherine wouldn’t “steal her spotlight.”
Katherine welcomed the peace. She stayed in the attic the entire day.
Near midnight, just as she was about to fall asleep, the door suddenly slammed open.
Nicholas stormed in, carrying the cold dampness of the night on him. His face was tense with a rare kind of panic and seriousness.
Katherine jolted awake and sat up, staring at him.
“Katie,” Nicholas said as he rushed to the bedside, voice urgent. “I need you to help me.’
“What kind of help?” she asked.

He said tightly, “Sammy was careless during the banquet. She accidentally smashed grandfather’s medal.” His brows were drawn into a knot. “It got posted online, and the authorities are furious. They ordered severe punishment. They want to throw her in prison!”
He grabbed Katherine’s hand hard, his grip almost painful. “You know Sammy. She’s weak and gets scared easily. She won’t survive a place like prison. Even if she doesn’t die, she’ll come out ruined. She just got divorced. People are already tearing her apart with gossip. If she has to go

through something like this, too, she’ll completely break. So… can you take her place?”
Katherine stared at him. He wasn’t even trying to hide the panic and concern he had from Samantha. Suddenly, she realized something terrifying. Maybe she had never truly known him at all.
She thought her heart was already dead and that it couldn’t hurt anymore.
But the moment she heard him so casually demand that she take Samantha’s place in prison and that she endure that humiliation and cruelty, something numb in her chest still flinched. There was a small, sharp pain.
Slowly, she pulled her hand out of his grip.
She said softly, “Nicholas, just because you won’t let her die… Does that mean you can sacrifice me so easily?”
