Madison glanced at her stomach. “Are you okay?”
“This tunnel’s pretty tight. We’ll have to crawl,”
“Wiona, maybe we should just wait here for Mr. Sullivan. I called Peter right before coming down, so they should be here any second.”
Wiona reached out and wiped a smudge of dirt from Madison’s nose. “Madison, I’m really glad you’re here.”
Madison’s guilt hit her hard. She squeezed Wiona’s hand, her eyes filling with tears. “This is all on me. You went through so much today because of me. If I mattered at all in the Simpson family, they never would’ve messed with you. And Giana... you took all that for me, too. I don’t deserve to be your sister.”
Wiona just smiled and shook her head. “Alright, since you care about me this much, from now on, you’re my big sister. For real.”
Madison’s face lit up. She threw her arms around Wiona. “Really? You mean it?”
“You heard me. No take-backs,” Wiona said, grinning.
Madison laughed, the relief clear in her voice. “I’m so happy. Wiona, you are the best thing that happened to me after I found my family. My parents, my brother... none of them can hurt me anymore. From now on, you’re my real family.”
Wiona felt tears prick her nose. Madison, you silly girl. Wiona had accidentally taken over her life for twenty-two years, and Madison didn’t resent her. Now she even treated Wiona like real family.
“Madison, I want you to be happy, too. So whatever Giana or anyone else does, I don’t really care. But if you’re ever feeling down, I’ll be your home and suppoer. You can always count on me, okay? Don’t let anyone walk all over you. I used to take it, too, and you know what? No one cared. You have to love yourself first. Only then will other people know how to love you.”
Madison kept wiping away her tears, but she was smiling. “Alright, I get it. Don’t get all sappy on me.”
