Just then, voices drifted down from above. “We’ve searched everywhere. No one’s here. They must be hiding in these storerooms.”

“Let’s use smoke bombs. They wil definitely come out.”

Madison’s face clouded over. “I’m going up there! They know you’re pregnant and they’re still using smoke bombs? What are they thinking?”

Wiona shook her head. “Don’t bother. Arguing won’t help right now.”

“This isn’t the time to settle scores.”

“We should just get out the other way.”

Annette nodded. “Wiona’s right. Let’s use the other exit. Hurry.”

So Madison dropped her plan to storm out through the basement. She turned to help support Wiona and Annette, and the three of them started crawling through a narrow passage.

All the way, Annette and Madison kept Wiona in the safest spot, right between them. There were a few tight corners where they had to squeeze through, and both Madison and Annette looked ready to panic. Luckily, Wiona was on the thinner side. Even pregnant, she managed to slip through without much trouble.

“You really don’t need to worry about me,” Wiona said as they moved. “When I first found out I was pregnant, I had to climb along an outside wall in the pouring rain to escape Jace and his mom.”

“And then there was the kidnapping. I got through that too.”

“These two babies are my lucky charms. We’ll be fine.”

Even so, Wiona was extra careful, shielding her belly from anything that might hurt her. Her words, though, nearly gave Annette a heart attack.

“Wait, what?” Annette gasped. “You climbed a wall in the rain? And a kidnapping? When were you kidnapped?”
