The guard could barely stand, his legs shaking so hard he thought he might collapse. “Mr. Simpson’s been keeping to himself lately. He hasn’t seen any visitors in a long time.” He swallowed, eyes darting nervously. “Mr. Sullivan, maybe you could come back another day...”
Just twenty minutes earlier, almost all of the Simpson family’s security team had rushed over to the warehouse. There had been talk of thieves and chaos breaking out over there. Meanwhile, the guests in the main hall were still blissfully unaware, kept entertained by other family members. Only Giana had quietly told the guards at the main gate to hold their ground and make sure nobody slipped out in the confusion.
No one expected people from the Sullivan family show up instead, and not just a couple of them, but an entire entourage. The guard nearly fainted from fear. He just knew things were about to get a lot worse, so he slammed the gate shut as tight as it would go. He’d planned on fobbing them off, saying the family wasn’t seeing guests today. But these people didn’t take no for an answer. They barged in, demanding to see Mr. Simpson right away. Mr. Simpson had retired from public life ages ago. No one dared disturb him, not even for Mr. Sullivan.
Before he could even finish his excuse, Peter stepped forward and kicked the door hard. “Come back another time? You wish!”
“Mr. Sullivan’s here for a reckoning, not a friendly visit.”
“We tried to be civil, but you’re not giving us a choice.”
“Get inside and announce us, or I’ll do it myself!”
Giana felt her heart skip a beat when she heard Conrad had arrived. Her hands trembled a little. What was he doing here? Who had tipped him off?
