Sophie’s scream sent Mrs. Clements flying into the room, her nerves already frayed. She took one look at her daughter, sitting on the bed with wild, red eyes, and rushed to her side.
“Sophie, what’s going on? What happened?” Her voice trembled with panic. “Didn’t the doctor say you need to stay in bed for three months? Do you want to end up sick forever? Please, stop scaring me like this. Think about your own future for once! Or do you just want to see me drop dead from worry?”
She wrapped her arms around Sophie, but Sophie shoved her away, her face hard and cold.
“I told you to leave, didn’t I? I don’t need you to take care of me. My life is none of your business.”
Mrs. Clements broke, her voice rising. “I’m your mother. Who else is supposed to care about you if I don’t? What are you even talking about?”
Sophie let out a bitter laugh. “Now you remember you’re my mom? What, the Clements kids you always fussed over don’t need you anymore, so you finally have some attention left for me? You still have that precious son you had for the Clements family. Go take care of him, just leave me alone. Please, just get out.”
Her anger flared again. She yanked the blankets off the bed and tried to get up, but her legs gave out and she crashed to the floor.
“Sophie!” Mrs. Clements shrieked, scrambling to scoop her daughter back into her arms.
“How could I ever stop caring about you? You’re my first child. If the Clements family hadn’t agreed to take you in, I never would’ve married into that family. Maybe I haven’t been there for you all these years, but everything I did was for you, to make your life easier. I gave you a brother so you’d have someone to rely on, so you wouldn’t be alone, so we’d have a place in this family. But you, you stubborn girl, you keep saying you want nothing from the Clements family. Doesn’t that make everything I’ve done worthless? Even if you make me sick with worry, I can’t give up on you. You’re my daughter. Please, don’t do this to me. I can’t stand to see you hurt. It breaks my heart.”
Sophie finally let her guard down. Her eyes, raw and red, filled with tears.
“Mom… Mom!”
All her pain and frustration poured out at once. She buried her face in her mother’s arms and sobbed, her heart breaking open.
