She halted in her tracks, pivoting slowly to face him.
A glimmer of hope ignited on Bryce’s face, illuminating the shadows of doubt that had settled in his heart.
See? She still glances back when I call her name. That must mean something significant, right?
But her frigid gaze pierced through his moment of optimism, leaving him frozen in place, his thoughts abruptly silenced.
Then, her voice sliced through the silence, sharp and unyielding, her eyes glinting with an edge that could cut glass.
“Bryce, enough. Stop asking me about who saved you from the water that day. We are divorced. Whoever it was, it’s no longer my concern.”
She stepped forward, her tone as sharp as a blade, closing the distance between them.
“Or what? If it were me, would you suddenly feel a pang of regret? Regret for how you treated me during those three years? Regret for the divorce?”
He found himself at a loss for words, the weight of her accusations pressing heavily on his chest.
—
It wasn’t until Riley and Sebastian had departed that Bryce felt the ground beneath him shift ever so slightly.
Regret? Me? Absolutely not.
She should be the one drowning in regret over everything that has transpired!
Did Riley genuinely believe that being with Sebastian would enhance her life?
How could someone like Sebastian truly care for her? It was merely a fleeting romance, a temporary distraction.
As for Bryce? Once he successfully navigated the company out of its current turmoil, he would reclaim his position at the top.
Then, Riley would come to realize that not being his wife was the most significant loss she could ever suffer!
Yet, why does this unsettling feeling gnaw at me?
With heavy steps, Bryce made his way into the infirmary, his complexion pale and drawn, as if the weight of the world rested on his shoulders.
The director looked up, a flicker of concern crossing his features. “Excuse me, can I assist you?” he inquired gently.
Bryce offered no response, his gaze fixated on the small boy lying on the bed, lost in a whirlpool of thoughts.
After what felt like an eternity, he exited the infirmary and dialed a number on his phone.
“Look into that river accident from years ago. The one where I almost drowned. I need to know—was Bella the only one there, or was someone else involved?”
With that, he ended the call, slipping the phone back into his pocket, feeling a strange sense of determination wash over him.
Just clearing up any lingering doubts about Bella.
Just ensuring that she’s the one who truly saved me!

As they made their way back to the banquet hall, Sebastian suddenly posed a question that caught Riley off guard. “What if one day Bryce discovers that you were the one who saved him? What if he feels regret over the divorce? What would you do then?”
“What?” Riley’s expression was one of sheer disbelief.
Yet, that warm sensation was fleeting.
That evening, when she opened the door, she froze in her tracks.
Sebastian stood there, a pillow clutched in his hand, looking uncharacteristically vulnerable.
Her eyes narrowed suspiciously. “What’s this supposed to mean?”
No way. He can’t be serious—
“I’d like to sleep in your room tonight,” Sebastian stated, his tone earnest.
“Why?” Riley pressed, her brow furrowing further.
“I get scared sleeping alone. You’re my bodyguard. You’ll protect me, won’t you?”
Riley nearly choked on her own surprise.
Sebastian is scared?
She recalled the fierce way he had taken down a group of attackers, disarming a man with a gun to his head, calm and collected, without a hint of fear.
And yet here he stood, dead serious, asking to share her room?
“Aren’t there bodyguards stationed outside your room?” Riley questioned, remembering the Torres family’s security detail that had accompanied them to the island for his safety.
“They’re not you. I only trust you,” Sebastian replied, his gaze steady and sincere.
