“My parents spent so many years worrying about him. Even if he has lost his memory, he should at least stand before their graves once,” Riley said.
“But it will be just the two of you driving through the night. Won’t that be exhausting?” Lara asked, clearly uneasy.
“It’s fine. This is nothing for me.”
Back when she was deployed, she had gone forty–eight hours without sleep, without rest.
Riley brought Zane to her car.
She drove first.
Zane sat in the passenger seat without speaking. His expression gave nothing away, and there was no telling what he might be thinking.
“Carmel is our hometown,” Riley suddenly said.
“Is it?” Zane lowered his gaze slightly.
“Our family used to be there. You, me, and our parents. When we were young, we lived in Carmel. Later, because of our parents‘ work, we moved to Washington, but we still turned 4 to Carmel every now and then ”

As the car moved forward, Riley slowly unfolded fragments of the past and told them to him.
Zane sat quietly, listening to the memories that no longer belonged to him.
“Because of Mom and Dad, you wanted to become a soldier since you were a kid. And because you were my role model, I also enlisted after college.”
“Then why are you no longer…” he asked.
“Because you disappeared. And our parents died. I was the only one left.” Riley kept her eyes on the road. “What our parents regretted most was that neither of us married or had children, so after they passed away, I left the service and got married.”
Yet the person she chose in her weakest moment had not been the right man.
“The man you married wasn’t Sebastian?” Zane asked.
“No. He is Bryce Murphy. We divorced five months ago,” Riley said.
Zane hesitated and then asked, “Did he treat you badly?”
“I was only the second choice he settled for. He wanted too much, and what I wanted was something he could never give. 2/5 Three years of marriage was nothing more than me trying to

“He does not deserve you,” Zane said.
Riley let out a faint, ironic breath. “If you were the Samuel who hadn’t lost his memory, you would be shouting about how you were going to beat Bryce senseless.”
Zane’s lips tightened, his shoulders drawing taut. “If I never recover my memory, will you still think of me as your brother?”
“Samuel is the person who loved me the most in this world besides our parents. From the moment I was born, he protected me without stop,” she said.
“He would risk his life for me, and I would do the same for him. If he ever regains his memory, he will regret many things he’s doing now. I don’t want him to reach that point.”
Her voice softened, though her resolve did not.
“And instead of asking whether I will recognize you, you should be asking whether you want to be Samuel or Zane.”
Zane fell silent again.
When the car approached an exit, Riley steered off the highway and pulled into a gas station to refuel. When she returned to the car, she said, “You drive for the next two hours.”
“All right,” he replied.

They switched seats.
Watching him take the wheel, Riley noticed that even without his memories, his posture, his movements, and his instincts behind the wheel were exactly the same.
Samuel had always been an excellent driver. When she was learning to drive, he had been the one teaching her.
By the time they reached Carmel, it was already the middle of the night.
“Let’s find a motel and rest. We’ll go to the Martyrs‘ Cemetery in the morning,” Riley said, opening her door.
“How… how did our parents die?” Zane asked suddenly.
At that moment, he was not asking as Zane. He was asking as Samuel.
“Three years ago, during a joint operation overseas, they were ambushed and killed. At the end, they held on to each other until their last breath. The local authorities performed a joint cremation before sending their ashes back home,” Riley said quietly.
Zane’s voice trembled. “Then… did anyone go with you to receive their ashes?”

“No,” Riley answered softly.

into the military base to receive the small, heavy urns.
“I’m sorry,” Zane murmured.
Riley shook her head. “Even though I went to collect their ashes by myself, their sacrifice was not forgotten. When I brought them from Washington back to Carmel, many veterans came on their own to escort us. When I buried them, there were many people who came to pay their respects.”
She turned toward him. “When I stood before their graves that day, I made a promise. I would bring you back to them. I wanted them to see that we were both alive and still moving
forward.”
Zane’s lips quivered as if he wanted to speak, yet no words.
came.
“Your disappearance was the deepest regret and pain of their lives. After that last mission, they had planned to return to the border and keep searching for you. But they never got that chance,” Riley said, her voice rough but steady.
