**TITLE: Dreams Refuse Gravity by Leo Arden Knox**
**Chapter 71: How Did She Know?**
“Bryce, what exactly do you mean by that? Are you saying you don’t trust me? Just because of something Riley said before she left?” Bella’s voice was sharp, laced with a potent mix of hurt and indignation. Her eyes sparkled with unshed tears, the anger barely masking the vulnerability beneath.
“Bella, please, let me explain. I’m just trying to understand what really happened back then,” Bryce replied, urgency threading through his tone as he searched her face for understanding.
“What happened back then is crystal clear. I pulled you from the river, Bryce. I literally saved your life. The ambulance came, and you were taken to the hospital where you received immediate care. Everyone witnessed it,” Bella insisted, her words tinged with a feigned fury that didn’t quite reach her eyes.
Yet, the clammy sweat on her palms betrayed her true feelings, revealing a nervousness that gnawed at her insides.
Bryce furrowed his brow, the weight of her words hanging heavily in the air. Yes, many had been present during that chaotic moment, and he knew he shouldn’t be questioning it.
But the image of Riley haunted him—the way she had spoken, so assured yet visibly disgusted, as if she had been the one to rescue him from the depths of despair.
“I never shared that with Riley, but somehow, she seems to know every little detail,” Bryce confessed, the confusion evident in his voice.
“Then why don’t you just go and ask her yourself?” Bella snapped, the words escaping her lips before she could stop them. The instant regret washed over her; the thought of Bryce confronting Riley sent a shiver down her spine.
If he did that, he would uncover everything.
Bella took a deep breath, attempting to regain her composure. “Look, a lot of people were aware of your injury back then—your classmates, the hospital staff, anyone who knew you. Riley must have heard it from someone else. If she really did save you, then why hasn’t she ever mentioned it before?”
Bryce fell into a contemplative silence, the puzzle pieces of his memory swirling chaotically in his mind. This was the very question that had been gnawing at him.
If Riley truly was his savior, then why had he woken up in the hospital to find Bella by his side?
“Riley probably just found out that I saved you and is trying to stir up trouble between us. That’s why she said all those things,” Bella continued, her voice steady but laced with an underlying tension.
Bryce remained quiet, wrestling with his thoughts.
Is that really the case?
