Seeing that Rosalia was no help and there was no way out, Davina finally forced herself to start explaining. No matter what, she couldn’t let them dig up her relationship with Barnard. If they did, it would only hurt the Carter family’s business, and she wouldn’t let that happen.
But things had already gone too far, and Bonnie clearly wasn’t going to let her off the hook.
Bonnie looked at her and said, “You want a settlement? That would be with the former Mrs. Carter, not me. Barnard divorced his wife because of you, and now your daughter comes out of nowhere and insults mine. Why should I settle anything with you?”
For the last while, rumors about the Carter Group had been spreading everywhere. People treated all their drama as a kind of soap opera to gossip about. When Bonnie said that, everyone nearby seemed to perk up, tuning into the conflict with fresh interest.
Now, every eye in the crowd burned into Davina.
“I wondered why she looked familiar. Isn’t that the alien?” someone whispered.
“Oh, if it’s her, nothing she does surprises me anymore. Alien civilization is just not the same as ours,” another said.
“The Carter Group is really something. Weren’t they just bragging a while back about how crazy in love Barnard and that woman are? Now it’s obvious… total disaster, perfect match, who else could stand them?”
“Seriously, lock those two up somewhere so they can’t mess with the rest of us. Every time they show up, the chaos just gets worse. I don’t think the earth can even handle them anymore.”
“We’re wasting time here. Officer, what’s left to discuss? These people are out of line. Just arrest them already.”
Newell, who’d been assigned to sort out the dispute, had honestly started off dreading it. But now, listening to Bonnie lay everything out so clearly—and seeing Davina have nothing to say in defense—he actually felt a little grateful. At least everyone now understood what really happened.
He didn’t waste any more time. With a short order, he told the officers to take everyone to the station and get their statements.
