The room was hazy with smoke. Andrew almost never smoked, unless he was seriously on edge. He stood by the big window, facing away from the door, a half-burned cigarette between his fingers.
Teresa set a plate of fruit on the table and walked over to him. She slipped her arms around his waist from behind, resting her cheek gently against his back.
“Come on, take a break and have something to eat,” she said softly. “Let’s get to bed early tonight. We’ve got that flight in the morning.”
Andrew didn’t move. He didn’t even turn around. He just stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray, his voice rough. “You should go to bed first.”
Teresa sighed quietly. “Andrew…”
She rubbed her cheek against his back, her tone sweet and coaxing. “I cut some honeydew for you. Your favorite. It’s really sweet. Want a bite?”
Andrew frowned. Inside, he was still pissed about what happened earlier. He’d promised himself there was no way he’d forgive her so easily this time—she needed to know he meant business when he said something mattered. But when she spoke to him like that, when she pressed up against him, all that anger just fizzled out. He was completely disarmed.
He finally turned around, looking down at her. His eyes were still a little cold, but the chill was already beginning to fade.
“Feed me,” he said, trying to keep a straight face, but the request came out almost boyish.
Teresa blinked, then let out a helpless little laugh. “Alright, I’ll feed you.”
She led him over to the sofa and sat him down. She picked up a piece of melon with a fork and held it to his lips. Andrew took a bite and chewed.
“Is it good?” Teresa asked, looking at him like nothing had ever gone wrong between them.
Andrew studied her face, still beautiful, with a few fine lines at the corners of her eyes and that gentle, careful love shining in them. His anger melted away completely.
He sighed, finally giving in. He put his paperwork aside and pulled her into his lap. Teresa landed with a little squeak, and he wrapped an arm around her waist, bowing his head so their foreheads touched.
Teresa shrugged, looking completely unbothered. “My reputation’s never been great, not since the day I went into that courtroom. I used to care, but now…” She looked right at him, her eyes clear and free. “It just doesn’t matter anymore. People will always talk. If I don’t go to those social lunches, and I don’t read the gossip, I don’t have to hear it. As long as you’re with me, and Emmy understands, nothing else matters.”
Andrew stared at her for a long, silent moment. Then he let out a long sigh.
In that second, he knew he’d lost to her completely. If this was what she wanted, he’d give it to her. After all, there was no one else in the world for him anyway.
“Alright,” he finally said.
He cupped her face, letting his thumb gently brush her lips.
“I’ll wait for you, no matter how long it takes. Whenever you’re ready to get married, just say the word. I’ll be here, ready to give you everything.”

Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
Really, why is there always some home wrecker added to these stories? I always enjoyed reading this until now. Had to go and ruin a beautiful love story....
