Teresa nodded, a little helpless but willing. She dropped her gaze, then leaned in and brushed her lips against his. “Thank you, Andrew,” she whispered. “Thank you for choosing to fall with me.”
At their age, walking away from the neat little boxes society wanted to put them in and picking each other instead felt like the sweetest kind of rebellion.
Andrew’s eyes darkened. His breath came faster, heavier. He slid his hand behind her head and pulled her closer, deepening the kiss. His voice was low and rough, thick with longing he’d tried to hide for too long. “No… thank you. Thank you for giving me this chance, for letting me fall with you.”
Before she could say another word, he scooped her up in his arms and carried her straight toward the bedroom.
“Andrew! We haven’t even finished the fruit…”
He didn’t slow down. “Forget the fruit. I want you more.”
...
Two more weeks slipped by. Emmy was still buried in work, but there was no news from James.
Meanwhile, halfway across the world in Southeast Asia, chaos was unfolding.
A deafening explosion ripped through the air, sending up a cloud of dust and debris. James moved like a shadow among the crumbling ruins, his team following close behind. His combat uniform, once black, was now a mess of mud, grass stains, and old blood. Camouflage paint streaked his face, hiding everything but his eyes. They burned bright, fierce and steady, like a wild animal’s.
For almost three months, they’d lived like ghosts in the jungle. Every day was a blur of scouting, fighting, and moving. Day and night had lost all meaning. No one dared take off their boots to sleep. No one let go of their gun, not even for a second. They were running on fumes, pushing past every limit they thought they had.
They were The States’ sharpest blade, the ones sent straight into the enemy’s heart when it mattered most. They had no way out, no backup plan.
Now, the end was finally in sight. Just one last fortress to break, one last monster to drag into the light. If they pulled it off, they’d change everything. The threat that had haunted them for years would be gone. They could finally go home and breathe easy, just like their commander had promised.
James chambered a round in his rifle, the sound crisp in the night. He looked up through the tangled branches at the dark sky, set his jaw, and promised himself, “We win tonight. There’s no other way.”
