During this holiday dinner, the two children ate until their bellies were perfectly round. Emmy, however, barely ate a few bites. She kept catching herself looking toward the door and checking her phone.
After dinner, Emmy stayed in the downstairs living room with the children to wait up for the holiday. The TV was playing The Holiday Special, filling the large hall with lively and festive sounds. But the two little ones were simply too young. By nine o'clock, they could no longer keep their eyes open.
Emmy moved the children to the inner side of the sofa and covered them with thick blankets. She softly instructed Jada to watch over them, then stood up and put on her winter coat.
Pushing the door open, she saw the snow was falling even heavier outside. The swirling, heavy snow draped the entire world in a vast expanse of white. Several young soldiers were still patrolling the yard, their boots crunching against the snow. Brett stood like a statue at the bottom of the steps. A thin layer of snow had already settled on his shoulders.
Emmy turned and went to the kitchen, cooking a large pot of sweet puddings. Steaming hot, they gave off a comforting, sweet aroma. She carried the tray out and called everyone over to eat. "Come have a bowl to warm your bodies."
This time, no one declined. In this freezing world, a hot bowl of sweet pudding was the greatest comfort.
Brett took a bowl and, disregarding any image, sat right down on the steps to eat in large gulps. Emmy sat on the step next to him. Holding her bowl, she felt the warmth seeping through her palms.
"Brett," she spoke softly, her gaze landing on the dark, distant mountain forest. "Is this the hardest holiday you have ever experienced?"
Brett swallowed his mouthful of pudding and wiped his mouth. He glanced sideways at Emmy and smiled broadly. "Not at all, ma'am. For us, as long as we are not spending the holiday on a battlefield, it does not count as hard."
Emmy paused, looking at him in confusion. "Then what did you do on the holiday eve in previous years?"
Brett smiled, his eyes taking on a distant look. "In previous years... if we had no missions, everyone would gather together to eat a good meal. Honestly, a bunch of rough guys like us don't really care much about the food." He pointed at the faintly visible city lights in the distance. "We prefer that kind of atmosphere. We also like watching The Holiday Special on TV, even if we sometimes don't understand the jokes. But as long as the people in those thousands of brightly lit homes can eat their reunion dinner safely and families can gather happily, we are very satisfied."
