At the mention of her departure, Emmy's shoulders instantly slumped. "The day after tomorrow."
The thought of leaving her children caused her mood to visibly plummet. The moment they arrived back at the castle, Emmy practically dove into the nursery. She wanted to spend every single second of her remaining time with Joey and Dolly. It wasn't until late into the night, when the two toddlers were sound asleep, that she finally and reluctantly stepped out to visit the study.
The next day, Emmy refused to go anywhere. She stayed inside, building blocks and reading picture books with her babies. When night fell, she brought the two little ones straight into the master bedroom so they could sleep with her. Normally, James would have worn a dark scowl and unceremoniously hauled the two little intruders back to their own room for monopolizing his wife. But tonight, surprisingly, he didn't kick them out.
Fresh from the shower and dressed in black silk pajamas, James leaned quietly against the headboard. One long leg was casually bent, and his deep gaze lingered on his wife and children. Emmy figured he was also savoring this rare family moment. After all, once she left, she wouldn't be back until Abriella and Will's wedding. She secretly vowed to work as hard as possible to finish her studies early so she could return home for good.
Time always seemed to slip away too fast. Before they knew it, the moment to say goodbye had arrived.
Even though Joey and Dolly were only twenty-two months old, they already had their own little personalities. Emmy didn't want to lie to them. She crouched down to meet their eye level, gently stroking their soft, chubby cheeks.
"Joey, Dolly," she began, her voice incredibly tender as she explained her brief absence. "Mommy has to go to school, so I will be away for a little while. But I promise, the moment I have any free time, I will fly straight back to see you."
The toddlers were highly sensitive to the concept of her leaving and seemed to instantly grasp what was happening. Dolly's little mouth puckered, and fat tears began to roll down her face. She threw herself into Emmy's arms, her tiny hands gripping her mother's neck refusing to let go.
"No... I don't want Mommy to go to school!" Dolly wailed. "Don't go... Stay and play with me!"
Emmy's eyes instantly welled with tears. She patted her daughter's back, coaxing her with gentle patience. "But Dolly, if Mommy doesn't go to school, I won't learn anything, and I won't get any smarter. And if I am not smart, I won't be able to protect you and Joey."
Standing nearby, Joey remained completely silent. His cool little face was set in a tight, stoic expression, his lips pressed firmly together. He quietly took a step forward, reached out a tiny hand, and tightly gripped the hem of Emmy's shirt.
A sharp ache pierced Emmy's heart, and a tear nearly escaped. She turned her head, pressing a soft kiss to each of their tender cheeks before continuing her gentle persuasion. "You two are growing up every single day, so Mommy has to grow up with you. I have to become stronger so the bad guys can't bully my two precious babies, right?"
