She was out.
Thank God.
As long as she made it outside, she’d be okay.
But if he went after her now, those maniacs would follow, and that would only make things more dangerous for her. There were still so many innocent people caught up in this mess.
James closed his eyes for a second. When he opened them again, nothing was left but cold, steely determination.
He pressed the hidden mic at his collar, his voice coming out low and deadly.
“Listen up.”
“Lock down the entire island.”
“Activate first-level security. Release all backup Minis.”
“Don’t let a single one escape.”
At his order, the dozens of robots scattered around the exhibition hall suddenly froze. The programmed welcome routines stopped. The gentle green lights in their eyes flickered, then snapped into a harsh, terrifying red.
A mechanical voice, perfectly in sync, filled the air.
“Threat detected…”
“Targets locked.”
“Commencing elimination mode.”
In the next instant, the harmless-looking robots raised their arms all together. Their palms flipped open, and hidden high-powered laser ports appeared.
A sharp, electric sizzle cut through the chaos.
With pinpoint precision, the robots fired. Two men charging forward didn’t even get the chance to scream before a scorched hole appeared in their foreheads. They dropped to the ground, dead.
James gave one last, lingering look at the exit where Emmy had vanished.
Whatever tenderness or longing he felt vanished too, replaced by something hard and ruthless.
He broke cover, stepping right into the open, letting every gunman in the room see him.
“You want me dead? Come on, then! Try it!”
His taunting laugh rang out. Then he took off, fast and wild, like a panther cutting through the chaos, making for the thick jungle at the edge of the property.
“There! He’s over there! After him!”
“Forget the robots! Kill James!”
The terrorists fell for it, screaming and stumbling after him in a frenzy.
Outside the exhibition area, everything had turned into pure chaos.
People were screaming, running for their lives, clutching their heads as they pushed through the crowd.
Emmy was just another face in the stampede, tossed and thrown like a leaf in the middle of a hurricane.
She barely had time to think about anything except protecting her head from the elbows and flailing arms all around her.
