Emmy was gasping for breath, her chest rising and falling so fast it felt like her heart might leap right out of her body.
There was this strange sense of familiarity, as if her heart had just lost control for a second. She didn’t know the man behind those eyes above the mask, but somehow, her body remembered what it felt like to be close to him.
“Over there! I heard something!” Shouts rang out behind them, close enough that Emmy could hear bullets smacking into tree trunks.
James grabbed her hand, his voice gravelly and strained. “Come on, we have to go. We need to hide.” He didn’t wait for an answer. He just pulled her deeper into the tangled, shadowy jungle.
He was moving so quickly, every stride long and purposeful. Emmy could barely keep up with him. They had only gone a short distance before her lungs felt like they were on fire, her throat tasted like blood, and her legs were heavy as stone.
“I... I can’t run anymore…” Emmy clung to his arm, her legs about to give out. Her face was ghostly pale.
James stopped for just a second, glancing back as the footsteps behind them grew louder. There was no time to think. He bent down, scooped her up, and hoisted her onto his shoulder. One arm around her waist, the other steadying her legs, he started running again.
Emmy’s stomach pressed into his backpack, the hard muscles of his back digging into her, but somehow it made her feel safe. “Hold on to my bag,” James said, his voice low and urgent. Then he took off again.
Even with Emmy over his shoulder, his speed never faltered. He darted through the undergrowth, jumping over fallen branches and ducking under vines, moving like he knew every inch of the place.
She had no idea how long they ran. It felt like forever. Maybe half an hour, maybe more. Emmy just held on, her hands clutching his backpack, hoping he wouldn’t drop her.
Finally, the gunshots and shouting faded away, replaced by nothing but the wind rustling through the leaves. James slowed down, searching for something. He found a shallow cave in the side of a rock, hidden behind thick vines. It looked like the perfect place to hide.
