Emmy stared at James, her eyes drawn into his, impossibly deep and intense. There was something in the way he looked at her—so sincere, so full of feeling—that she felt herself getting lost in it. Almost without thinking, she nodded.
The tension in James’s face melted away. A small, almost shy smile curved his lips. He spoke softly, his voice deep and comforting.
“Let’s get to know each other again. I’m James, Mr. Nelson from the Nelson family.”
Emmy blinked, a little confused. James? In her memory—even the fragments from before—she’d only heard of two sons in the Nelson family.
James must have noticed her confusion because he went on, “I grew up in the military, under special circumstances. Hardly anyone knows there’s another Nelson son.”
He paused, a shadow passing through his eyes. “You might be wondering why everyone calls me James. The truth is, I had a twin brother, Jamie. We looked exactly alike.”
His voice softened. “Ten years ago, Jamie died. Because of me.”
He let out a breath, steadying himself before continuing. “I wanted to finish what Jamie never got the chance to do. So I came back to the Nelson family, using his name.”
Emmy listened, her mouth falling open in disbelief.
James saw her shock and tried to explain more. “About our marriage... honestly, it started out as an arrangement. Something that worked for both of us.”
“But after everything that happened, all we went through together... even if you can’t remember now, it’s still true.” He paused, swallowing hard, his voice dropping to a rough whisper. “You’re a part of my life I can’t live without. My family.”
He wanted to say more. She was more than family, she was everything, but he held back. He didn’t want to overwhelm her.
Emmy watched him, listening, and the fog in her mind seemed to swirl and thicken. She tried to remember, just for a second, but pain stabbed at her temple and she had to stop.
James noticed right away. He gently lifted his hand, hovering it in front of her face as if to shield her from her own thoughts.
“Don’t. Don’t try to think about it.”
