Chapter 110

Chapter 110

No one could truly understand just how emotional Mrs. Berenson was right then.

After all these years.

She never got to see her daughter return.

But at least Arie came back to her.

Mrs. Berenson hugged Nerissa, bawling her eyes out.

She was a complete mess, tears streaming down her face.”

It was like all the years of pain and suffering finally had somewhere to pour out.

“Arie, Arie,” Mrs. Berenson sobbed, her voice shaking. “Nineteen years, my dear! Nineteen years! Do you know how hard your grandma has searched for you? I’ve been hoping and praying every single day and night, and finally, you’re back where you belong.

“My poor Arie, you’ve had to endure so much out there all these years…”

No one could ever truly understand just how much Mrs. Berenson had suffered all these years.

Sure, she had plenty of kids.

But as a mother, who could ever bear to be separated from her own flesh and blood?

Even if she had a hundred kids, she still couldn’t just pretend none of it ever happened.

Day in and day out, she missed her daughter and her granddaughter, never letting a single moment pass without thinking of

them.

For all these years, Mrs. Berenson kept up with every health check and stuck to a healthy lifestyle, just so she could one day welcome her daughter and granddaughter home in good health.

Nerissa just stood there, a bit bewildered as Mrs. Berenson hugged her tightly

Besides feeling lost, there was also a heaviness in her chest.

Somehow, seeing Mrs. Berenson cry like that, Nerissa couldn’t help but feel awful too-her nose tingled, and she almost wanted to cry herself.

Nerissa felt miserable.

In that moment, the room went dead quiet.

Everyone stopped talking.

The only sound was Mrs. Berenson crying.

All the Berensons just stood there, watching Mrs. Berenson break down-no one could bring themselves to interrupt her.

Because they understood, she’d been bottling up her pain for way too long.

She needed to cry her heart out like this.

Watching Mrs. Berenson sob so heartbreakingly, her sons and daughters-in-law were all choked up, unable to hold back

their emotions.

Everyone silently wished this was really happening.

If only…

Just imagine if Nerissa turned out to be Arie-how perfect would that be!

Chloe couldn’t hold back anymore-she threw her arms around Frederick, sobbing. “Frederick, Mom’s life has been so tough.”

Frederick’s eyes were red and swollen too. “I just wish Ms. Jamison really was Arie.”

Burke glanced at Harvey and Marianne, his eyes full of confusion. He lowered his voice and asked, “Mom, Dad, does Dr. Jamison really look that much like Aunt Charlotte?”

Back when Charlotte had her accident, Burke was only six or seven, so he barely remembered her at all.

Even though there were photos of Charlotte around the house, the Berensons had put them all away, afraid that seeing them would just make Mrs. Berenson miss her daughter even more.

Harvey nodded. “The resemblance is uncanny. She looks so much like her.”

That’s why, even though it was their very first meeting, they found it so easy to trust Nerissa.

‘Arie?’

Hearing Mrs. Berenson call Nerissa that, Anna felt nothing but disdain.

‘That brat Nerissa really thinks she can just magically become someone important?

‘Dream on.

Besides, Ariel has been dead for years.

Anna remembered her mom telling her about it.

The crash was a total nightmare.

Blood was splattered all over the place.

‘Mrs. Berenson’s eyesight really isn’t what it used to be.

‘She actually mistook someone else for her own granddaughter?”

Anna looked up at Nerissa, and when she saw Nerissa’s eyes were a little red, her gaze was full of disgust.

‘What’s this wannabe trying to pull?

‘Seriously? She’s crying now?

‘She’s just some random girl who’s only met Mrs. Berenson once, and she’s already acting all dramatic.

‘What a shameless brat.

‘She really thinks I can’t see right through her?

‘She’s obviously trying to milk the whole “savior of Mrs. Berenson” thing, ride this wave, and worm her way into the Berensons as their precious granddaughter.

‘Someone like her, a nobody who can’t even show her face in public, actually thinks she could ever be part of the Berenson family?

‘In her dreams. Anna rolled her eyes, full of contempt.

Nerissa forced herself to speak, pushing through the swirl of emotions inside. “Mrs. Berenson, you’ve got the wrong person. I’m not Arie-I’m Nerissa Jamison.”

‘Not Arie?’ Mrs. Berenson thought, stunned.

‘I’m Nerissa.’

Nerissa’s words brought Mrs. Berenson back to the present moment.

Just then, Verena chimed in, “Mom, this is Dr. Jamison-the doctor who saved your life.”

Hearing that, Mrs. Berenson just looked up at Nerissa, almost in a daze.

Her eyes were a storm of emotions.

Still… this child really does look so much like Charlotte.

Mrs. Berenson gripped Nerissa’s hand tightly, her voice rough from all the crying, “Dr. Jamison, thank you for saving my life. From now on, you’ll always be the Berenson family’s greatest benefactor!”

Truth be told, Mrs. Berenson wasn’t afraid of dying.

After all, everyone has to face death sooner or later-no one can escape it.

But what really haunted her was the thought that she might leave this world without ever seeing her daughter or granddaughter, not even once.

No one could ever imagine just how excited she was when she first opened her eyes and saw Nerissa right there.

In that moment, she truly believed she’d finally found Arie, and that the girl standing before her was her own granddaughter -Arie.

“Mrs. Berenson, please, you’re being way too kind. It’s just my job as a doctor to help people,” Nerissa said softly. “You’ve only just started recovering, so you really need to take it easy. Try to avoid any big emotional ups and downs for now-it’s best for your health.”

There wasn’t a hint of pride or conceit in the way Nerissa spoke

She was like a rare orchid blooming on a sheer cliff-exceptional, yet always humble.

She stood out from the crowd, but never acted superior.

After saying that, Nerissa gently helped Mrs. Berenson settle back into bed, making sure she was comfortably tucked in.

Just then, Victor seemed to remember something and asked, “Dr. Jamison, when will my mom be discharged and able to go

home?”

“She’s good to go home whenever you want, but she’ll need to keep taking herbal medicine for another week to really stabilize her condition,” Nerissa replied.

Hearing that, Eliana spoke up, “Dr. Jamison, my mom really can’t stand anything bitter. Is there any way we could switch her to Western meds instead?”

Western meds are all pills anyway.

She can just swallow them straight down, which is way easier for someone her age.

Nerissa shook her head gently. “Herbal medicine might taste bitter, but it’s easier on the body and much better suited for Mrs. Berenson’s current condition. Western medicine does work faster, but it’s a lot harsher. If we switch her to that now, it could end up causing liver damage.”

Nerissa paused for a moment, then smiled gently. “If Mrs. Berenson isn’t fond of the bitter taste, I can turn the herbal medicine into tiny, easy-to-swallow pills for her.”

Making pills would be a bit of a hassle.

But that was no big deal.

Nerissa was never one to shy away from a little extra work.

Besides, she was really fond of Mrs. Berenson.

Eliana was just about to thank her when Mrs. Berenson, still lying in bed, chimed in, “Don’t worry about me, I’m tough-I can handle the bitter stuff. No need to trouble yourself, Dr. Jamison.”

Mrs. Berenson had just woken up and was still feeling pretty weak. After being brought back to her room, she dozed off not long after.

Doctor’s Office.

Eric was busy organizing patient files.

Actually, today was supposed to be his day off.

But ever since he took over as the chief physician in Kindowen, he’d been sacrificing a lot of his free time.

“Dr. Campbell! Dr. Campbell!”

His assistant’s voice rang out from the hallway.

Eric looked up and saw his assistant rushing over to him, clearly in a hurry.

“What’s going on?” Eric asked.

The assistant was out of breath, stammering, “M-M-Mrs. Berenson…”

Eric’s eyes widened. “Mrs. Berenson?”

Hearing that, he shot up from his chair. “Is something wrong with Mrs. Berenson?”

Even though Eric had always believed Nerissa was just a fraud who didn’t know the first thing about medicine, he was still shocked when he heard the news.

“Thank goodness.

‘Good thing I said no when she asked me to be her assistant.

‘Otherwise, I’d be one of the suspects tool’

The assistant hurried to explain, “No, that’s not it! Ms. Jamison really is a miracle doctor-Mrs. Berenson is awake and totally

fine now!”

‘What?’

When Eric heard his assistant’s words, he was totally shaken.

He couldn’t believe it-Nerissa had actually cured Mrs. Berenson!

‘Wait a minute…

‘Does she really know the legendary Needle Crossing?

‘But Nerissa is so young!

‘How did she pull it off?’ he wondered, completely baffled.

He looked at his assistant. “You saw Mrs. Berenson yourself? She’s really all right now?”

“Yeah, I saw her with my own eyes. She’s fine,” the assistant said, nodding.

Eric’s face was a mess.

He looked downright devastated.

Just seconds ago, he’d been patting himself on the back for not signing up to be Nerissa’s medical assistant.

But now…

Hejjust wanted to smack himself for being such an idiot.

He was regretting it.

Regretting it like crazy.

He was kicking himself so hard he could practically feel his insides turning blue.

If he’d known Nerissa was really this talented, he would’ve jumped at the chance to work with her.

If he’d become her medical assistant, he could’ve learned some real skills from her, and maybe even gotten to be one of the people who saved Mrs. Berenson’s life.

That would’ve been a huge boost for his career.

But now…

He’d actually turned down the chance to hit the jackpot.

Eric slumped into his chair, his face drained of all color.

A few seconds later, he shot up from his seat and headed for the floor.

His assistant quickly asked, “Dr. Campbell, where are you going?”

“I’m going to check on Mrs. Berenson’s condition,” Eric replied.

“I’ll come with you,” the assistant said.

Eric was getting desperate.

The VIP ward was on the 17th floor, his office was on the 19th, but the elevator was still down on the first floor. He couldn’t wait anymore, so he spun around and dashed for the emergency stairs.

He decided to take the stairs.

Eric refused to believe Nerissa had really cured Mrs. Berenson!

Thud, thud, thud-

Eric’s footsteps were fast and urgent.

A few minutes later, he reached the VIP floor.

Standing at the door of the hospital room, Eric took a deep breath, fixed his tie, straightened up, and finally knocked on the door.

“Come in.”

It was the sixth Berenson daughter-in-law, Aileen.

Eric pushed the door open with a friendly smile. “Mrs. Aileen, I’m here to check on Mrs. Berenson.”

Aileen nodded. “Come in.”

Mrs. Berenson was fast asleep.

Seeing her lying there, Eric finally relaxed.

‘Guess my assistant was just being dramatic.

“Turns out Nerissa didn’t really pull off a miracle,’ he told himself.

He glanced at Nancy and Chloe, who were standing by the bed, and lowered his voice. “Mrs. Nancy, Mrs. Chloe, didn’t you say Mrs. Berenson’s condition had improved and she was already awake?”

Chloe turned around with a smile. “After Dr. Jamison’s treatment, my mother-in-law really has gotten better. But she’s still a bit weak, so she just fell asleep.”

‘She’s just sleeping?

‘You sure she’s not just knocked out?’ he muttered, still not buying it.

Without seeing Mrs. Berenson wake up for himself, Eric just couldn’t believe a kid like Nerissa, barely eighteen or nineteen, could actually use Needle Crossing everyone was talking about.”

His whole worldview was getting flipped upside down.

Right on cue-

Barely had Chloe finished speaking when Mrs. Berenson opened her eyes, glanced at her two daughters-in-law, and said, “Nancy, I want some water.”

Nancy sprang to her feet to pour her some water. “Sure thing, Mom, I’ll get it right away.”

Only then did Eric finally let himself believe what he was seeing.

His face was a mess of emotions-he couldn’t even tell what he was feeling.

‘It’s real.

‘It’s actually real.

‘I really blew my shot at a promotion,’ he thought, his heart sinking.

Right now, he was hit with a flood of emotions-he felt so gutted he could’ve burst into tears right then and there.

If he’d known it would end up like this, he would’ve never said no to being Nerissa’s medical assistant.

Eric couldn’t even remember how he walked out of that hospital room.

He just hated that there was no such thing as a regret pill in this world.

Inside the hospital room-

After taking a sip of water, Mrs. Berenson asked, “Where’s Dr. Jamison?”

“Mom, Victor and Verena, and Joel and Jessica just took Dr. Jamison back to the hotel,” Nancy replied.

Mrs. Berenson looked at her two daughters-in-law. “Nancy, Chloe, don’t you think that girl looks just like Arie? It’s uncanny -she’s the spitting image! Seeing her is like seeing Charlotte all over again. Do you think she could be my Arie? My poor, precious Arie…”

By the end, Mrs. Berenson started crying again, tears streaming down her face.

She really missed Arie.

She missed her so, so much.

Nineteen years.

They’d been searching for Arie for nineteen years!

A whole nineteen years.

Seeing Mrs. Berenson so upset, Chloe tried to comfort her. “Mom, we haven’t done a DNA test yet, so we’re not sure if Dr. Jamison is really Arie. Please don’t get too anxious. We’ve asked Dr. Jamison to visit us at home tomorrow. I remember Arie had a red birthmark on her arm, didn’t she? Tomorrow, let’s try to check if Dr Jamison has the same birthmark on her arm. If she does, then we’ll get the test done.”

Over all these years searching for Charlotte and Ariel, they’d run into plenty of people who looked just like Charlotte.

They’d even met scammers who got plastic surgery just to mimic her appearance.

After so many ups and downs, and with Mrs. Berenson’s health too fragile for any more emotional rollercoasters, the whole family agreed to hold off on the DNA test until they were really certain.

“Okay, okay,” Mrs. Berenson said, already trying to sit up in bed. “Dr, Jamison said I’m good to go anytime, so I’m leaving now! I need to get things in order back home.”

“Mom, don’t rush. Just rest for a bit-there’s no hurry. You can leave later this afternoon.”

Mrs. Berenson nodded, then asked, “By the way, did you notice it that girl has dimples when she smiles?”

Charlotte didn’t have dimples.

But Arie did.

Even at just three months old, Arie was already smiling.
