Jason stood there, silent, his hand slowly rising.
Jason, don’t be a fool!” I blurted out, reaching for him. My wolf transmitted a message through our Pack bond, “IF YOU LAID A HAND ON XANDER, RUMORS WOULD FLY THAT YOU’D BEATEN XANDER BECAUSE OF ME! I’D NEVER HEAR
THE END OF IT AT KINGSTON.”
Jason’s hand froze mid–air. He looked at me, his eyes brimming with barely contained sorrow. His wolf raged, “YOU ONLY CARE ABOUT HIM NOW, NOT ME? YOU HEARTLESS OMEGA!”
Me:“…DUDE, WE SEVERED THE BOND. IT’S ONLY BEEN A DAY! ARE YOU DEVELÒRING DEMENTIA?”
ason offered a wry, heartbroken smile.
My wolf replied a fake smile, “OH, YOU POOR THING.”
We continued our silent conversation through Pack bond. He wanted to play the victim; I’d cultivated an iron heart.
ason turned away, his hand falling onto the table amidst the tense anticipation of everyone ready to intervene. He spun the lazy Susan, grabbed a bottle of wine, and a glass.
Kander’s eyes narrowed.
Xander, I apologize; my sincerity wasn’t sufficient earlier. I’ll drink three toasts as penance.”
ason poured himself a drink and downed it in one gulp. Then a second, then a third…
Everyone was stunned. They’d expected a fight, but instead, he was apologizing. Jason was considered arrogant among MoonCloud Pack’s young masters, especially with his title as the Pack’s youngest Head Warrior. He didn’t owe anyone an explanation. If it weren’t for business, seeing Xander with his ex–partner would have ended in a fistfight.
Zane Cooper, who’d spent ten minutes reasoning with Jason, thought: For him to suddenly become so understanding for the sake
of business…?
ust as everyone was marveling at Jason’s compromise, something felt…off.
He’d said three toasts, but he was on his seventh.
Enough, enough!”
Jason, you’ve gone over the limit!”
Someone take the bottle away from him!”
Everyone chimed in. Any attempt to take the glass was met with either a shove or a chilling glare. This wasn’t an apology to Xander;
It was a thinly veiled excuse to drown his sorrows, a silent accusation against Xander for stealing his ex–partner.
Xander chuckled coldly.“Jason is quite the melodramatic actor.”
Jason remained silent, continuing to drink. He emptied the bottle. “Mr. Shaw, are you satisfied with my apology? If not, should kneel?”
Xander: You really are selling this misery well.”
Suddenly, Jason swayed, falling backward, toward me. I had to catch him before his weight knocked me to the ground. He turned, using me as support.
“Sit up straight!” my wolf snarled, my eyes blazing at him. “IF YOU’RE GOING TO MAKE A FOOL OF YOURSELF, DO IT QUIETLY, DON’T DRAG ME INTO IT!”
His face contorted in pain. He wrapped his arm around my waist, leaning his head on my shoulder. “My stomach hurts.”
